Painting on Mars
Someone just gave me a bag of Golden acrylics so I thought i would try them out. It's been a long time since I used acrylics and I forgot how different they are. As a dyed-in-the-wool oil painter it truly was like painting on Mars!
Anyway, here's an attempt at a local scene using a foreign medium.
Thanks for looking....
8 x 8 acrylics on board

Re: Painting on Mars
Yep, acrylics are hard for me. I have a friend that gets a lot of color out of acrylics. I can't do it. Seems like you did pretty well!

Re: Painting on Mars
Wonderful result ... love those nice juicy brush-strokes on the hill and foliage. I've never
tried Golden Acrylics, always frightened off by the price in Bris Vegas. 3 primaries plus
white would be 50 dollars plus here. Ouch!.

Re: Painting on Mars
Very nicely done. It's simple and quiet - just a beautiful scene!

Thanks, Monica, Mary.
Dwayne - it does seem tricky to get the same richness of color. But I know it can be done. Just look at Marcia Burtt's work
50 dollars?! Wow, John - that's as bad as buying good linen panels here in the US!

Re: Painting on Mars
Great job Randy. I think you did a good job of controlling the color and I really like the brush work. I know what you mean about acrylics, they are different, especially compared to oils. In our climate you don't dare lay the brush down long without cleaning it unless you want to turn your brush into a stick.

Re: Painting on Mars
Hi Randy,
Not so bad at all, actually pretty good. Switching mediums if you don't do it all the time is daunting at best. I had some acryl;ics laying around I hadn't used in years and tried them out one day but it went so bad I tucked them away in shame, hahaha.

Re: Painting on Mars
It's funny... I can't paint in oils worth a darn... everything ends up muddled. But acrylics work great for me - I guess everyone is different.
Nice job on the painting - great mix of colors and sense of the wild.

Re: Painting on Mars
Thanks, Bill, Ali!
Hey Rob - Yeah, acrylics may not be a stellar idea up in the high desert! You could bring along one of those misting contraptions that I see in the restaurants out in the desert. Just bring your own water truck....
Thanks, Ron. Don't know that I want to switch but I'm always trying new stuff. Not sure if that's good or not - but it sure is fun!
Matthew - I can definitely see how much easier it is to keep the colors clean on the canvas. Do you paint outside a lot with acrylics? If so, what do you use for a palette? Don't want to get dried paint on my wooden palette.
