I’m starting my list of recommended books…and if you saw my shelves, coffee tables, counters (just ask my wife!)…you’d know how I spend whatever free time I have!!!
Just came upon this book…and wow, I think I need to be joined at the hip with this guy! Carl Purcell…great information on seeing the value patterns that compose great paintings, value shapes, uniting shapes to the most common value. Well explained…and timely with my first lesson and first assignment. Don’t hesitate on this one!

Another great book I recommend. “Landscape Painting” written in 1929…from artist/teacher John F. Carlson…
When I first bought this, because I had heard great things…I was disappointed. Like so many…I went straight away to check out paintings, and much of the book is in black and white. Okay…well, true to what one might expect if they think about it I suppose, of that written in 1929…
And like others I have talked to over the years, I was discouraged. In my case…I put the book on my shelf with so many others and forgot about it. Six years later, I pulled it off the shelf and gave it a more serious read. It was like John Carlson was talking directly to me. I would say that John…is a painter’s painter, and a teacher’s teacher! If you want a great book, in fact I insist you perhaps can’t be taken serious as a landscape painter rubbing shoulders with peers in this day if you don’t have it. It has been a great resource for me, and a companion. Clearly explaining values and what happens in light, space from near to back there. What happens to color, why color cools going back…just on and on.
Clearly this one needs to be on your shopping list!!! :thumbsup:

If you fly, teach workshops…pack your gear for travel, you know carrying extra weight is difficult…all but what is necessary. For my carry on to Alaska, several books and a sketchbook accompanied me, these were two of them and I felt most useful…
I own both of Kevin Macpherson’s books, this one, “Inside & Out” was too good to leave home. His “theory of relativity” stems from his saying, “painting is not a task of matching the colors, values and edges found in nature, but of capturing their relationships” …which works in well with my saying, “paintings work for reasons paintings work!”
and this one, by Mitchell Albala- Landscape Painting Essential Concepts & Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice…
a most comprehensive (if I could have only one) kind of painting book…highly recommended. I’d say a teacher’s teacher…a contemporary (if there is one) I’d compare to John Carlson…for pertinent practical information.
