Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

Listening to some hometown boys... from a good number of years back:

The Cleveland Orchestra and Leon Fleisher under the baton of George Szell at the time when they were deemed the "best band in the land". This recording remains one of those in classical music that is almost universally acknowledged as unsurpassed. Stunning!

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

We’re currently stuck in the middle of the weather system that passed over central and eastern US over the last few days; snow, freezing rain, rain, high winds; temperatures going from about -15C to 10C (~0F to 50F) and then back down again. The roads are barely passable. So it’s a day to work quietly in the studio, with all the lights on, the heat turned up, pretending it’s spring, listening to Pascal Rogé on this:

(At least until the power goes out )

Cheers,
Chris

Our little pup, Raphael comes running in from the cold and snow and you can almost hear him calling out, "Get me the **** outta here!" as he dives under the blankets.

How about some Yo-Yo Ma, Rafie? Nothing better than the warm dulcet tones of the cello well-played on a cold Sunday afternoon... while sipping coffee and bourbon.

You’ll just have to get Raphael out on a troika for a sleigh ride!

A little vodka under the bearskin probably wouldn’t go amiss

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

Well... they have spent much of the day hiding beneath the blankets.

Raphael especially reminds me of Van Eyck's portrait of a Man in a Tuban...

... with the red blanket wrapped around his head.

As for us... we have the electric fireplace/heater going and are all wrapped up in blankets/sweaters/sweat-shirts as well. No Vodka... it does bad things to me... but we are on our second pot of coffee and have been doing some bourbon as well. If that's not enough, I might break out the Jack Daniels.

Over the last hour I've been listening to the wife and brother snoring in the next room and Gundula Janowitz and Schubert coming from the computer speakers:

This was one of my first collections of Schubert lieder and it remains one of my favorites.

Why did you name him after a Ninja Turtle?

Actually, I didn't name either dog. My wife named both, Pepper and Raphael. My brother suggested Leonardo for the little guy, but she didn't want to have people think we'd named him after Di Capprio or the grossly overrated Dan Brown book. Turner is probably her favorite artist but she didn't think the name suited him so it ended up Raphael.

Love June Tabor. Beck's OK. Prefer the late Gary Moore - was my favourite for years....

Enjoyed seeing the dogs and hearing about how Raphael and Pepper were named

If he chases his own tail, as some dogs do, then Turner might actually be the perfect name. :-)

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

When in remission from long depressive periods where I can't listen to any music at all, I need music like I need food and drink.

I crave silence, yet it terrifies me, so, even when I go away for long periods of retreat and solitude, I am never without music.

It plays in my mind from waking to sleeping. I sing and dance when I work in the house, or play with the pup. When I am working at the computer, I play music constantly - matching each track with my transient moods.

I've started to look through past posts here. I listened to the version of Tri Matelod posted by ministerstwo_grafitu, which was delightful, and I've made a note of the singers name so that I can listen to more of her work later.

However, after listening to it, I had to play my favourite version of it, because it's one of my favourite live versions of Breton music of all time!

My ex used to play with Stivell and Dan Ar Bras in Brittany. I have met them, briefly, and I love what they do, but it is, as ever, the inimitable and very tasty Jean-Louis Jossic who always steals the show!

Gotta love that crab sporran and the kilt!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra3Igp-Zr6Y

This last Christmas, my Belovèd and I planned a holiday in the La Forêt de Brocéliande in the late autumn, as neither of us have ever been there before, and I hope to hear some live Breton music then, or, even better, enjoy a few seisúns

My lover can no longer hear music, as Menière's eventually made him profoundly deaf without his hearing aids, and music sounds pretty awful even on his good days with them in, but he has lately found a way to appreciate rhythms, and I'm working on ways to enhance this experience for him...using technology, either already existing, or invented with the help of techie friends....

Me playing the bodhrán helps, of course

I love that song. Thanks, had forgotten about it. Listening to it now.

Have you seen the stars tonight? Would you like to go up on A deck and look at them with me. Have you looked at all the family of stars.

Should be the Pantheist theme song.

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

I've been listening to a good deal of Baroque music recently. It seems well suited to cold winter weather... and especially the holidays. Inspired by a post over on the Creativity boards, I put on some lovely lute music by Sylvius Weiss:

I followed this with the Capricci for solo violin by Pietro Locatelli:
