Refined Beauty - WIP

Going to start on this board, but all those tiny flea-bitten spots on his coat are scaring the bejeebers out of me. Anyone have advice? Here's to hoping I don't chicken out on this one.

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Does doing a basic overall scratch, then inking in the spots and re-scratching to integrate them sound like a good plan?

Cath's the resident horse lady. You picked a tough one. Is it a white horse with black spots or a black horse with white spots? Your idea of a plain scratch then intergrating the black sounds to me lik a good plan, but what do I know. Ha you will learn a great deal however you do it.

In my day job at the moment I'm making roofing tiles. If I passed your board through our colour slurry, it would put some interesting spots on it for you

That's how I would tackle it, however if it wasn't a commission I would probably do a lot less flea bites... LOL

This is going to be so worth the work! You'll do great! Sometimes...and maybe this is cheating, but sometimes, I'll put black back into a scratchboard with a brush tip fine art marker. You could consider that for retouching if you need to. I'm sure you'll do just fine though!

Netta, Hobby Lobby, if there is one available, carries waterbrushes (plastic tubes with screw on brush heads). You can fill the tubes with diluted ink and brush in the black areas. Several tubes, each diluted different amounts, let's you adjust the darks and lights as you need. Just a thought.

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Wow! Thanks for all the encouragement and tips everyone. I haven't even taken a blade to the board yet...too many end of the school year stuff going on this week. Hoping to start on it tonight though.

Cathy...I might do less spots.
Harold...it's a light grey horse with strawberry spots, but I'm not ready for color yet, so we will pretend they are black. I also have a Hobby Lobby about half a mile away and happen to have an unused set of empty watercolor brushes. Thanks for the tip on using them to ink!
Patrick...lmbo!
Jenna...I've got both Sakura and Pitt brush pens in black, so we will see what happens when I get to the spots part of things.
