Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

I started this last night... I have it earmarked for a client that loves seascapes... Still working on it, but was surprised it came so easily and fast. 40x30 cms Acrylic.

Good for you Meryl Strong colours and shapes.
The sea area on the right - between front and mid wave seems to lack some clarification - but it is a WIP so no doubt you have that already in mind!

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Good morning everyone. Here's my wave painting exercise. Good that its only an exercise as I haven't made a great job of it.
A4 size on watercolor paper, which I didn't stretch so it buckled as you can see in the sky. Then when I tried to pull the masking tape off (to get a nice straight horizon) I pulled some of the paper off too!!! and I said b****y thing!
And then I couldn't get nice translucency in the wave no matter what colors I put on it...then I went a bit mad with all the spray and foam off the waves. So I've poked and prodded and fiddled around with it, and thought I can't delay posting any longer.
I should have done what you suggested Maureen and tried a practice wave on scrap paper first...we live and learn!

C and C's especially appreciated.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Cindy love what you've done. Very cool colour on the wave.

Judy you're off to a great start.

Meryl, wow. That's a super start as well.

Vivien I don't know what you're saying - your waves are fantastic. And that foam is perfect. How did you get it so light and 'foamy'? I jus know mine is going to look like dollops of whipped cream.

Ok, I need to get back to mine...

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

To all the other painters,
Loving everyones variations. There are so many good waves and foam to learn from. Per Maureen's suggestion, I decided to work on the girls in the surf. I really like this photo, many credits to the photographer. The dark haired girl could be my niece Victoria at that age.
I have put on light layer of Chroma acrylics to try to get values set. The paint needs to be sealed so I can start with a heavier layer of paint.
Anyone else working on another of the photos? Painting in hot dry Utah. Diane

Viv... In the words of my forbears "stone the flaming crows". What do you want for Christmas? a new pair of glasses>>>> THIS is superb.... And ..the foam is awesome... Try a T square ruler and a watercolour pencil for your horizons.. works for me

Dianne...top figures there, looking to see this completed

Here are the next 2 stages of mine:

(It's small so the struggles are less visible)

This one is larger because I'm getting happier with it :

Hope to get back to it tomorrow.

Desthers- your painting of the girls on the beach look great. Looking forward to seeing you progress. All the references Maureen suggested looked really appealing.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Meryl & Colin - Thank you so much for your very kind comments on mine, but I see so many things wrong with it! I'm going to attempt another seascape, this time of a different ref so hope to do better.
And thanks for the hint Meryl. I haven't done much landscape..or seascapes (animals and flowers are so much easier!) so didn't know about the wc pencil for the horizon.
Both your new paintings are coming along beautifully!

Desthers - Your painting of the two girls in the surf is looking good.
If you are working with Interactives: if you use the "Clear Painting Medium" to mix with your colours, it will give you a bit more time to blend etc and when it dries it will also seal that layer.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Viv....That looks great! Love the shadows and light in the foam!
Desthers...Looks super so far. Looking forward to progress pics.
Colin...That is coming along nicely. you should be happier with it.

I'm hoping to start on another one but relatives soon to arrive and I have no clue how long they intend to stay. Plus my big computer is totally out of commission so I need to find a reliable place for repairs. Seems like there is always something costing us $$$. So goes life.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

This is the second stage of my 2nd seascape...

This photo is taken at night, under my interior lights all paintings tend to have a yellow sheen to them...

I have mainly been concerned with getting the foreground waves looking natural. Still a work in progress.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Spent a couple of happy hours outside with the paints working on this and shouting words of encouragement to DW who was up to her wrists weeding the garden beds.

Anyway I think my 'study' is done-ish:

Phew.

Colin, Well done... in my book you have nailed it.

Thanks for the comments on my rocks, I have texturized them with Gel Paste in the acrylic paint.. Will look more natural after greying down somewhat.
