Hi, from my experience you are right and another very important thing is, that next layers' colors should be opaque.

Howard,
what kind of paper did you use when you made your alcohol on acrylic work.
I used to work on 400g/m2 Fine grain Acrylic paper and there were white stains from alcohol. Better colors and without stains it was on 290g/m2 Oil-Acrylic Coarse canvas texture paper.

I used a gessoed water color paper for my piece but I should think any would do. May have to do with the gesso surface.
