A Grey Day On The Prairie

The view is looking toward my place, which is on the other side of the hills - If you walk out my backdoor, cross over the hills, you come to this prairie marsh - The hike is a good mile, but well worth the effort, for you enter a world of complete peace and solitude -

This marshy area is home to nesting waterfowl and songbirds; the Golden Eagle hunts here, along with other predators looking for a meal; the Doe mothers her fawn; the Antelope come to drink and occasionally one will see a Moose - It is a wonderful place to commune with Nature -

For reasons unknown I have painted this scene as a Grey Day with a setting Sun -

Oil on canvas glued to hardboard, 12 x 16; Palette: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Italian Green Earth, Ultramarine Blue and Cremnitz -

Comments and suggestions always welcome -

Thank you for viewing - Hud

I agree with Richard. This does feel moody, and I like that! It sounds like a true natural haven, and I can certainly see why you've chosen this beautiful spot as a subject for painting. Nice work with the reeds and water grasses. Interesting colors too. Really poignant, lovely work!

A calming, moody solitary scene. I can see why you love this place to live.

Re: A Grey Day On The Prairie

Your color pallet is perfect for depicting a quiet solitude. I can imagine one just standing there, looking at this view and contemplating life and remembering times past. On my monitor, the bird looks a little dark and stands out a bit too much compared to the rest of the muted colors (that may just be how it looks on my screen and not in real life - so take this comment with a grain of salt). This may be one of my favorite of yours - it almost feels like a self portrait of how you feel inside in your heart - I think it's incredibly beautiful

CaliAnn: Thank you very much ... I sincerely appreciate your comments and analysis ... your take is most interesting and intuitive -

I have been studying on this painting most of the night and this morning ... I agree, the bird is to dark ... plan to lighten it up some and add others ... Crows tend to travel to their roost in the evening in flocks instead of singly -

Re: A Grey Day On The Prairie

Have done a little more work on the painting ... mainly adding a flock of crows instead of having just one going to roost - Too, toned down their color -

Re: A Grey Day On The Prairie

The lightening of the bird fits in better to this beautiful painting. Out of curiosity, (and I know I'm going to sound nosy - but I am curious) - when you originally painted this and you included just the one bird - were you feeling lonely? I saw the single bird as an expression of loneliness - maybe I'm reading too much into it!?!

Re: A Grey Day On The Prairie

A really lovely improvement on this painting. I like the flock of birds flying off into the distance. Well done!
