DaveMay 5, 2019 at 11:55 pm #822513Nice work…I’m uneducated in the concept of barges in this instance. I wonder if you could enlighten me with regards to that aspect.
May 20, 2019 at 4:21 am #822515Thank you for your comment jonc50,the Thames barges where used for transporting goods on the Thames estuary and other estuaries along the east coast of the UK.They had flat bottoms for entering shallow creeks and sitting on the sand when the tide went out, they also had Lee boards to counter balance these flat bottoms whilst out on the open sea,the Main sail and the Jigger sail where Spritsail rigged for ease of management by a small crew of 2 or 3 men and the top sail was almost in a fixed position whether in use or not.I hope that I have got this right!.
DaveMay 29, 2019 at 4:24 am #822516These are Mersey Barges known as Mersey flats, these 2 are rigged as sloops with a Gaff rig used within the Mersey and the river Weaver and the canal systems, other Mersey flats where ketch rigged for sailing out of the Mersey and along the Lancashire and North Wales coasts
