The Spotlight - July 2018 - Boats

Welcome artists!

Here is a quick recap of what The Spotlight is all about!

The Spotlight is an activity thread for pastel artists of all experience levels working from photos chosen by a monthly host. Most months, the host will choose photos from only one subject, putting that subject into “the spotlight,” so to speak! For example, one month the subject will be painting water, another month will spotlight flowers, etc.

Some months, rather than spotlight a subject, the focus will be on a challenge of some sort. In those cases, we might have a wider variety of photo references, but “the spotlight” will be on the challenge itself.

Since this is a group activity, we can pool our knowledge and resources, and grow as artists in a fun, “no-pressure” atmosphere.

And, remember, no critiques unless specifically asked for.

The intent is to have fun, try new things, experiment, and perhaps most of all, to see what our friends and colleagues are painting from the same reference material!

Please note: The photos this month were taken by me or are from the Reference Image Library. You have permission to use the photos as reference to create your artwork and to sell them and/or exhibit them. The actual photos still retain the copyright of the photographer. So you cannot copy the photo to your blog, for example, without the permission of the photographer, or digitally alter or reproduce the photo for any purpose other than for your personal use, with the exception of crops, digital alterations and posts of these photos within "The Spotlight" thread.

This month's Spotlight is on...Boats!

Here in the Northern Hemisphere it's summer! And right now here in Rochester, NY, as well as in much of the country, we're having a heat wave! So, let's do what people did before the invention of air conditioning to beat the heat - let's head for the water! And put the Spotlight on...Boats!

Before we go to the references, let's get inspired by some boat paintings! One of my favorite painters - who loved to paint boats - was Winslow Homer! Here are a few of his wonderful paintings:

And now the references:

The rest of the photos by me:

As always, feel free to modify the references any way you wish!

Feel free to share any summer boating pics you may have as well!

And have some summer fun!

Don

Hi Don,

you have chosen a great summer subject.

Here comes a boat painting just from my easel.
I am not quite sure if I am ready yet.

This is the marina of Toledo at the Lake Garda (north Italy) at a summer morning.
The reference was my own photo, taken last summer.
All kind of pastels on PastelMat (30x40cm)

C&C always welcome

Esther, this is wonderful. Restful and cool. And the people are so well done! I love the way you did the “woods” area under the trees. I just want to walk in there. Great job!

Re: The Spotlight - July 2018 - Boats

As painting boats was so much fun last time, I did another one.

Here is "Funboat No.2 ", all kind of pastels on PastelMat(30x40cm)

My daugther and her aunt in a kayak at the Baltic sea.
I took the photo four years ago.

Esther, What a wonderful painting! So many really nice touches here! The water is lovely and it recedes nicely into the distance! The little details on the boat are perfect and I love those light reflections that come off the water on the front end of the boat! I have always found that drawing and painting boats is never as easy as it looks. They have those subtle curves that need to be done just right - and you have got them just right!

Esther, what a beautiful painting! And the way you painted water is fantastic. I never know how to paint water And the little details on the kayak are great! Did you use pastel pencils for that?

LOL, I have just noticed that my comment is almost the same as Don's

Thank you very much for your comments Don, Nick, Karen.

Nick, yes the kayak and the people were done with pastel pencils, as the details are really small. The water was done with soft pastels, all over an underpainting with watercolors in contemporary colors.
