Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Wonderful to see your work and progress, Sandra! As I use mainly found materials and collage them with text and watercolour etc, it's great to see things from the start up! Thanks for letting us share your work and experiments.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Belle, thank you. I'm definitely planning on sharing my work and experiments, even when my sketches are not that good (as you've probably seen if you read this entire thread).

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

I did a few more drawings of the second bonus challenge for the scroll.

I am finding that when I have my pencils needle sharp (or almost needle sharp), it helps the lines be darker and HB pencil show up better.

These were done with HB and 2B Staedler Mars Lumograph 100 pencils in my Robert Bateman sketchbook.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

You are so disciplined! I envy that. Wello done.

I agree with you in what needle sharp pencils is concerned. I use The Kum Masterpiece sharpener, which makes it really needle sharp.
It helps me to control the pression I use, too. I tend to really hard press, when writing and drawing.

Edit - Belle, you should open a thread wih your collage art journal, and share all that with us.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Maria, thank you. I think with the pencils I need to have them needle sharp for this paper as it is so smooth. On Strathmore Recycled Drawing paper it is not needed since it is so textured.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Day 19 was devoted to pyramids. These turned out to be a lot of fun.

Then, on day 20 it was back to drawing organic shapes. This time it was volcanoes, craters, and a cup of coffee.

The cup was frustrating me so it took me a while to get the proportions right for how it looked in the book. That page isn't quite finished yet, so it'll be uploaded in the next couple of days.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Nice exercises.

I like the arched pyramides. They must have been fun to draw.

Ahh, proportions: I have trouble with it. Not an evidence.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Maria and eyepaint, thank you both. Yeah they were tricky, but once I understood that Mark Kistler wanted the cups to have the width and height about the same it was easier. I'm working on the bonus challenge today and it is a lot of fun.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

Here is probably my best attempt at the cup of coffee from Day 20.

The bonus challenge for this day was to draw a combination of volcanoes and craters. I started by following the general guide of Mark Kistler's volcanoes and craters sketch and then added some of my own volcanoes and craters.

Re: Sandra's practice sketchbook

I like your volcanoes and craters!

The coffee cup looks more proportionate than the others.
