Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

This week is to practise fundamentals with ink.

Each ink sketch took about 20 to 30mins. The references are provided by Dewi who host the WDE for this week. She is also generous to upload larger references into the RIL.

All are 9x12 in with black ink. Some has second attempts. Practise, practise and practise~.

#1 sleeping figure attempt 1

#2 sleeping figure attempt 2

#3 Hen & Eggs ref 1

#4 Hen & Eggs ref 2

#5 Bomb flowers

#6 Kind lady attempt 1

#7 Kind lady attempt 2

#8 Kind lady attempt 3

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Hi JayD! How is the brush pen?

#21, Baby is DONE!

As mentioned over in the WDE, I will need a at least a few years or few hundreds tries to practise and this shall be the start

To prevent further damage to to the paper, this attempt ceased. It been fun doing some parts of it. I liked the wool portion best! Its a shame not able to capture the cuteness in her.

Among the many problems, the most glaring would be the eyes.

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Hey, I have been out scoping birds for drawing but I did this Durer doodle and these cattails with the Tombow and I do like it a lot--but honestly--I still feel the love for my ticonderoga number 2 and my pics---but this one is definitely a keeper so it's worth a try if you are interested.

by the way like what you are doing--love the baby crossed eyes--seen that so many times. Nice work!

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

i like the hen and egg sketches, and i think doing multiple attempts of the kind lady picture is a good way to learn from each attempt and to make progress,

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

been trying to keep my critiques to a minimum but this is a bird--when you do a bird, set up your preliminary drawing and then establish a center line right down the middle--this is very important--birds are an exercise in symmetry. Birds visually are about flight and balance. I love this guy by the way--he is texturally beautiful.

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Hi JayD, do feel free to comment. All comments are feedback for me to reflect upon and hopefully to improve on. Anybody is free to comment. Some improvements will take longer time and depending how deeply they stuck in my head... some might take even longer to rectify.

Drawing to me is an activity to focus my attention and build up a skill that I find enjoyable. I figure that is a more economical and "constructive" thing to during my free time.

Your comment of using a vertical line for symmetry strike a chord with me. sometimes I missed out things unexpectedly. For this owl, I was too occupied with using horizontal lines to proportion the body but completely forgotten about using a vertical line. I was a bit puzzled by the big:small eyes on the owl but just dismissed it as an error in judgement during drawing.

I got a weakness for patterns..it immediately creates an "OMG" and I just want to take the shortcut to get it over with but at the same time still wish to create a better effect than before (pretry self conflicting).

Bottomline, just comment and I will try to reflect and learn

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

well, first and foremost, drawing should be about sheer enjoyment and meditation--not whether you get the hair just right or the tone exactly as it is in the picture--that leaves little room for interpretation.

I think your drawings are raw and extremely exceptional. they exude originality and are a pleasure to look at. I know you are copying as exercises but if these are your practice scales I can't wait to see, sometime further down the road, the concerto.

guidelines, you should aways lay out even in sketching-not tight constructive follow to the direction or die kind of lines like you see in a how to book--just some light notes to your self on which direction you want to go--how the movement will flow, that sort of thing so you don't have to go back and fix something or chalk it up to ....ahem...style....like i sometimes do.

I think you smile a lot when you draw. Never stop doing that.

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Thanks JayD!

I been very busy with work and likely to get busier in the months ahead. Meanwhile I grab a free slot while I can to catch up on my sketching

I saw an interesting thread of portraits drawing at the subforun. Lots of materials ( photos posted) for practise. planned to slot in a few sessions to practise the materials.
