Title: Emerging
Year Created:
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 51 x 41 cms
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

Having completed a colour version and a charcoal version I have eventually painted this monochromatic oil to complete the set. I submitted the other two a couple of weeks ago. It shows an emerging sun and a trio of gulls emerging from the darkness. I thought about calling it "Ascension" to hint at the Trinity.

Any thoughts on tone and atmosphere would be very welcome. Also, are the gulls pulling their weight?

Re: Emerging

I think its your best version of the water, and I like this color. The gulls work but Im not personally struck by any symbolism on their part, I think the painting could take or leave them.
the left side is a little darker than the right, is that just in the photo?
the lower clouds that dip down directly to center I normally dont like but for some reason i like it here. The part that im not sure about is the stuff above that.
those clouds, compared to the rest, look like brush strokes sort of going straight out, and altogether around in a circle. Its not bad, its either a clash of style or just my taste.
I like everything below a lot. I am seeing that water as night color, imagining a full moon and luna halo. So I might be mixing up the intention of day emerging and seeing it wrong.
Its a lovely painting, quiet and strong, and works in different ways depending on your mood.

Re: Emerging

Thank you very much, Sevan, for the great feedback. Much appreciated.

Yes, it's just the photo.

I've slightly exaggerated the effect of the upper clouds but not terribly so, although they are unusual formations and really quite straight.

I'm really pleased the overall effect is working and I must admit I tend to agree with you about the time of day. The monochromatic version does look moonish. Thanks for the comment about the gulls. They're doing no harm so I'll leave them. Cheers for that.
