Newbie with wire questions

A family friend who sells beads and jewelry supplies gave me a huge box of amazing loot. He saw my paintings and thought I'd make some interesting jewelry.

I've never made jewelry before and the beads and cultured sea glass and charms are all beautiful. He also included supplies like pliers and wire and things.

I feel like a lot of this will be intuitive for me, or I'll figure it out by playing, but I'm not really clear on using wire. I think he only sent one thickness of it (don't know if there are usually other options), so I'm guessing that will work for necklaces and bracelets alike. I can thread things, but I don't know what do do with closing the pieces I make. I think there might be clasps in there. How much wire do I leave at either end? What do I do with the wire when I'm done?

Thank you.

I think you might get some help from a youtube search.

Try Pinterest online. Then do a search on wire work in the jewelry section. Lots of tutorials, etc.

Here is a tutorial on using wire in a very simple pendant. Great for a first time project. I made about 10 pendants using this tutorial.
Have fun.

Re: Newbie with wire questions

Hi! I've been a jewelry designer for 12 years and recently began to paint! There are many supply places that offer a tutorial to help you with wire. I use wire to wrap beautiful cabochon stones into pendants. One of the sites you can go to is http://www.firemountaingems.com/ and go to their resource center. You can also google wire wrapped pendants to find other sites. Best of luck to you and feel free to message me with any other questions you may have if that is allowed. (I am new here).

I also use wire to make my own findings...like bracelet and necklace hooks and earring hooks. If heavy enough it's also good for large jump rings for bigger, heavier objects. It also makes good pins with hooks at either end for joining.

Once you start making a lot of jewelry, you'll find all kinds of little uses for it.

What a great gift!
Lots of ideas on Pinterest.
