Here’s my take on Foggy Drive. 12×16 inches mungyos/senns on clairefontaine pastelmat (love this paper).

                        Rich,
This is beautiful. Can you explain a little bit about the colors you chose and technique you used to create the foggy atmosphere?

                        Thanks,
                        Raj

Thank you Christel, Raj and Paolo! Much appreciated.

I’ve attached a photo of the exact palette I used for this painting. Mostly mungyos except for senn white, dark purple (almost looks black), dark green and plum. I used Clairefontaine pastelmat paper

I paint back to front, so my underpainting was put in using nupastels and I chose peach, light pink, white and light grey for background trees/sky. I sprayed a fixative over that and then used mungyo silver grey to “mute” these colors and used a variety of greys, blues for furthest trees. (careful on the blue).

I reinforce the furthest tree trunks with a beige/pink (warms them up) and use senn white (not too much) with mungyo silver grey to create my light (my lightest value).

I spend a lot of time on my backdrop – a lot of blending using my fingers and 2″ stiff bristle brush. The values in the back need to be muted, less saturated, and “soft”. So I spend most of my time on that. Then my foreground is not blended and has darker and more saturated values…

The foreground darks are put in using mostly my dark senns and one medium brown mungyo. The fog was put in by taking my light grey (has a blue tint), laying it broadside to paper and very slight pass and then circular blend motion with my fingers. Very slight pressure, hardly any. I also used a 2″ brush, but mostly it was my fingers spreading the light grey around.

My background is very much blended and muted before I apply the light grey for fog.

                                        Rich,
Thanks a lot for sharing your palette and explaining your technique. I don’t have all of your palette colors, but still trying to create something similar to yours. Here is what I have got so far. Please give suggestions for improvement.

                                        Thanks,
                                        Raj
