Re: June Challenge: Animal and Wildlife....Please come and join in the fun
Hi: WetCanvas members and guests: I'm not really an animal or wildlife painting specialist, but aside from creation of my (expressionist) art, the most important field to me is the preservation of endangered animals and their environments, which go hand in hand. A little while back I volunteered one day a week to a wildlife sunctuary, which took care of exotic animals discarded from outlawed circuses, and from people whose "pets" got too large for them to keep in their homes. I told the director that I would volunteer my time if I could work with big cats. She agreed. It was not glamorous, Besides feeding, I had to clean out their enclosures. But it was beautiful working with these large cats. The only cat that I felt completly comfortable with was with the Cheetahs. But even with the Cheetahs you had to have a cat that had been hand-raised from birth and bonded with humans for them to be friendly and predictable. In these cases I was even on working friendly terms with leopards and mountain lions. Many of them were lonely and when you entered their cage they would come up to you and show real affection. Lions and Tigers were just too huge, I would never enter their enclosures. Even though I probably would have been OK the director had a rule: no entry for the huge cats. I hope that artists and others who read this post will realize that exotic endangered animals are lifeforms just like we are, and we deserve to give them the best possible lives that we can. One of the Cheetahs I used to interact with used to come up to me like a lonely housecat, rub against my legs and purr like a loud motor. It was lonely and very sweet! --Update, as in the past the wildlife images that I tried to upload were said not to be uploadable because they were not gifs or jpeg's. They are, absolutely. Because they are on my website, which is all a jpeg photogallery of my paintings. I'll just leave this to text, success and happiness to everyone who tunes into this site. Starr II

Re: June Challenge: Animal and Wildlife....Please come and join in the fun
First I want to congranulate all the fine artists and photographers who contributed to wetcanvases' "Animal and Wildlife" series, and to the bloggers who commented. I am not really an animal or wildlife painter, I am technically an expressionist, and on my new website where I have 144 pictures, there are only about 6 that have animals, wild or otherwise. But this is a subject that interests me deeply. There is nothing more important than saving the endangered animals and their fast dissappearing habitat. On my site I have a picture of a white wolf at first light in a pristine landscape, a cougar in a pleistocene landscape that is as far removed from reality as the buffalo herds that were in the millions 150 years ago in America. I have a lion in a dream, I have a leopard in the foothills of Nepal's Annapurna Massif. But this is where my heart lies. Since there is only one more day of June I wanted to comment on this tremendously important issue before we move on to other topics or subjects. All the bes to everyone, success to all, Starr.
