        Hi all,

James Gurney adorns his sketchbook covers with hand-lettered titles that I admire very much. See, e.g.: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2015/08/new-sketchbook-cover.html

I’m trying to do the same, but I’m a complete newb when it comes to calligraphy/lettering! I use the same sketchbook he does (Pentalic Aqua), and I have one jar of the same one-shot enamel paint he uses. But my results are not as good. Any general advice?

I gather he uses a watercolor pencil to sketch out his design before he paints. I need to try that! Also, I’m not sure what sort of brush to use. I’m using a couple of cheap small nylon brushes — cheap because I’m not sure how to clean brushes holding this rather stubborn paint. Nor do I have any clue what “fonts” or styles to emulate.

Finally, is it hazardous to inhale this stuff? The product has a scary warning label. I’ve been lettering outdoors, but I can still smell it when I paint it on.

        Many thanks!

        - Geoff.

Nylon won’t work with 1shot. You need a good sable liner or lettering brush. Dick Blick is a good source – they may also sell 1shot reducer. You need this to get the right consistency, and to allow the paint to flow, and dry properly.

Get a good brush, that is really important. Also, check youtube for pinstriping tutorials – they use the flow of the paint to get smooth lines, they use 1shot, too.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I’ll poke around Blick.

                Thanks again.
