Just recently finished a paper sculpture of a Mandarin duck that I wanted to share.

This project began last fall as a colored pencil construction, using gray and beige mi-teints paper to boost the color and values of the feathers. They were then cut out and glued to a card stock support. This is as far as I got with that approach:

As I worked, the project went in a new direction. I liked the symmetry and detail captured in the reference photo and thought an all-white paper sculpture would make for an interesting interpretation. Much as I love the rich colors in the photograph, i couldn’t resist the challenge of the road less traveled.
