Lightbulb 8/30/12 Product Info Tip of the Week - Removing Kiln Wash From Fused Glass

Removing Kiln Wash From Fused Glass

When fusing glass in your kiln, if your kiln wash is not properly applied and sanded before firing, your pieces will come out of the kiln with a coating of kiln wash on the back of them that is nearly impossible to scrub off with soap and water. I have found that a Dremel tool, with the right attachments, works wonders to take off that left over kiln wash and even file down any sharp edges left by the frit and stringers that strayed too close to the edge of the piece.

With the steel brush bit attachment for your Dremel you can quickly remove any kiln wash that was left from firing. Kiln wash can be hazardous when it is inhaled, so, just as you would if you were sanding your shelves, you need to be in a well ventilated area and consider wearing a respirator if you are sensitive to the dust.

Sharp edges on the glass piece can be quickly filed down using the Dremel Rubber Polish Point. This bit does leave marks in the glass, so be very careful when smoothing rough edges close to the front of the piece!

The last step is to take a lint-free cloth and wipe your glass piece with a little Windex to remove any left over kiln wash and to reveal the shine of the glass.
