Quasi-Nocturnal just before sunrise WIP

Got some easel time in today and started a new piece. It is a local Water Valley landscape inspired from a photo I took early one morning on my drive to work just before the sun came up over the horizon. I love where I live!! The early morning skies are always breathtaking!

Anyhow, this WIP is painted in oils on canvas board in 16x20. I like how it is going so far and can’t wait to get back at it. Please do not hesitate to critique... All comments positive or negative are always welcome and appreciated!

This is looking great. I travel at this hour too, and I love it. I look forward to seeing this as you finish it, particularly how you handle the road in the foreground.

Thanks Bardo! Roads are a bit intimidating for me. Lines must be just so and I don’t always do “just so” so well...

A great experience on a morning commute. It looks like a good start. In fact it tells a pretty complete story. Gary

Great job with the perspective on the clouds and the dramatic light. Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

Nice so far. I can feel the time of day. There is a sense of tension and calm anticipation. The grove of trees on the left and slight tilt to the horizon give a feel of motion against the staid position of the road. Very nice.

Thanks David! I am working towards creating feeling for more than anything else now. I appreciate hearing that!

Thanks! I have stuck to a pretty limited palette with this. Ultra marine blue and burnt sienna for the black and cobalt blue, cadmium red medium and cadmium yellow for everything else and of course some white (titanium). I am enjoying mixing most of my colours these days rather than just squeezing from the tube, as much as I want to! Lol! I love all those pretty tubes of colour!
