I have at last retired and have some time for art. This is an afternoons output. A4 layout paper and various pencils.
I started with an outline drawing, then drew in a ‘wireframe’ to get the shape. Some is still visible in the highlight areas. Finally shading in the various tones.
Model was a 1:72 scale Revell kit with an Airfix man.
Its good fun.

February 26, 2020 at 6:53 am #952194Good drawing given the scale of the model.
February 27, 2020 at 9:51 am #952199This is a subsequent effort – about three hours. Its a rendition using only lines, the wireframe without any shading. I must admit its difficult not to suddenly shade a dark area, so discipline is required, and its bit tedious to do!
I think the trick now is to provide sufficient wireframe to indicate what the image is rather than labourious rendition of every single surface and feature.
Model here was an Airfix 1:72 scale kit.

https://ianrevealed.blogspot.com/February 27, 2020 at 1:05 pm #952198It is a pig of an aircraft to get right.Very subtle curves that look straight but curve and twist.I personally would add some shading under the wheels to ” ground ” it , looks like it is floating. Good stuff and keep up the shading

(It wouldn’t be Airfix without a Spit!)https://spartidesign.myportfolio.com

I agree, its a tricky subject. The wing is a pair of curves and was designed with a twist along the line of the wing-spar to provide the pilot with a stall warning shudder.
Another thing I noticed when working on this image is that the 1940 green and brown camouflage are almost the same tone, so become indistinguishable in grey scale digital images. I wonder if that is why RAF changed from brown to grey and green for their colour scheme!
