My niece

Hi, my first watercolor portrait. I have only been trying watercolors out for the past month or so. Tried something creative with this one. All comments and critiques welcome.

Re: My niece

Well done! You have captured her facial features and likeness very well indeed - not easy to achieve.

I think, perhaps, you could show just a fraction more leg; the little girl is almost hovering without support in the grass.

Re: My niece

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback. I was not initially happy with it. I do better portraits in oil. Of course, oil allows for corrections to features along the way.

Anyway, I thought I'd give it one more go.. I made sure to measure the facial features with a ruler from the computer screen so that it is more precise. I hope it's a little better now? Also, I was able to be a little more in control of the colors on the face. I incorporated the feedback of showing a little more leg in the grass to overcome the "hovering" look. Also, I thought I'd made the grass a little less saturated this time. Some more freedom with the masking fluid.

Please let me know if this is ok. Thanks so much for all the help. I much appreciate it!

Re: My niece

Bhindi - of course it is OK! So much in painting is a matter of opinion, not of right or wrong 😊

In my opinion (and that is all it is) I like the juicier more saturated greens around your niece which seem to go well with her bright red coat.

Re: My niece

Thanks, Mike. I do understand that a lot of art can be subjective. As I am learning, I try to absorb as much as I can of the input I receive and process it to the best of my ability. There are times when I am not in agreement with the suggestion and simply do nothing.

However, in this case, I found that there was room for improvement and since this is family, I decided to go for it. Small things can make a difference to a painting and the lesson can be kept in mind while doing the next one.

About the colors, I think the green is louder on my painting in front of me than it is on the computer screen. The longer I looked at it, the more I felt it needed a little muting. I can see that even the new painting looks less saturated than the one I'm looking at.
