Gamblin is indeed very similar, as is old-style binding varnish used in offset lithography. And you are right: it can be used for all sorts of cool things.
Another good transparent medium is very thick "stand oil" which can be purchased at any store that caters to oil painters. When lightly pigmented, and used sparingly it makes fabulous ghost images! (you may need to add a little Japan Drier to it though)
