Briefly, can a visual artist get into legal trouble for stating in the caption area on social media or in some sort of handout literature associated with a real-world exhibit that “This painting was inspired by The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’” or “I got the idea for this sculpture while reading ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac”? Thanks in advance

No, because you can’t copyright an idea, only words/images. So there is no violation of copyright.

If you, or when you go to art school (college) when doing a crit the artist gives a little speech about where the ideas came from– for instance, inspired by “XYZ.” In books, if you ever were to publish a coffee table book of your work, you would want this information in it. I think it is very important to keep track of “where” the ideas come from. Keeping a journal while doing your art is a good way to capture realizations like where the idea came from.
