Purbeck cliffs

After hundreds of years of quarrying in one form or another, the cliffs of Purbeck are left scared and broken. I have tried to portray this landscape here. I think it lacks a clear focus though. C&C Welcome.

Light and airy. I really like your color choices.

Re: Purbeck cliffs

I agree it needs a better focal point, but your water is really lovely.

Beautiful color, textures, and drawing! I agree with you- I feel more value is needed. If you like to see, I would offer a variation with digital modification- let me know

Re: Purbeck cliffs

Your painting instantly put me in the UK when I saw it, nice job with capturing the scene! I don't know if the cave is a good thing to focus on or not, but maybe it could be used to that effect if it were darker? It's intriguing to me at least Beautiful scene

Thank you Merriweather, Allison, Stapeliad, Ken and Paul for your comments. Yes please Ken I’d very much like to see what you have done with it digitally.
Always interesting to see another’s take on things.

Re: Purbeck cliffs

Perhaps you're right about it needing focus, but you've captured quite a beautiful light in this painting.

Re: Purbeck cliffs

When I visit sea cliffs, it is the waves crashing against the rocks that are the main attraction, so that is what I would focus on.

I think focusing on the cave would distract from the rest of the painting. The focal point should be the water on the rocks. Making it more contrasty by adding highlights and shadows to the rocks, and making the waves a little more pronounced (area within the red oval), and perhaps also accentuating the area within the yellow oval, just a bit less.

Re: Purbeck cliffs

Nice work. I looked at it for a long time, all over the water, sky, rocks, etc. and to me that makes it a success

Great oil sketch. I wouldn't mess around with it. Try another view.
