I painted a few miniatures on wood before but it seemed that the grain showed thru and I had a hard time getting the fine detail I was after. I also tried those mini canvases and they also seemed to pick up the grain of the canvas. The grain seemed to me to be a problem as they are so small that it detracted from the overall appearance. Yours are so beautiful.
August 6, 2018 at 5:56 pm #668656Yes, you need a smooth surface, especially if you do glazing. I use Claybord panels made by Ampersand Co. They are available at Blick and other suppliers. They make a panel that is ACEO size (2.5″ x 3.5″) called Stampbord which is actually Claybord cut to ACEO size. I also use Ampersand’s “Artist Smooth Panel”.
