African Future FINISHED

What? Two pastels from me in the same week?

Just working on this as I have an article to write for Australian Artist and am submitting the WIP for this. I hope I don't stuff up. It's a boy I met in Namibia.

This is a wonderful portrait Patrick, very skilfully executed, what surface is this painted on? Can't wait for the next update.

Re: African Future WIP

What a beautiful start. I love the way you're using the color of the paper to your advantage. It is going to harmonize the painting very well. I'm looking forward to your updates.

Re: African Future WIP

Fabulous Patrick! You've done that face so well I am in awe!! I've recently done a portrait of a black girl and got most confused with the colours reflected in the skin....but I put them all in anyway!
That is a hard expression to portray I think, but it looks so natural. The finish will, I'm sure, be great!

Re: African Future WIP

Patrick, great to see you back!
Your portraits are always brilliant, and this is no exception - it is awesome already....the technical side is flawless, but what really gets me every time is your ability to capture the personality of your subject and how you make them come alive on the paper - amazing...

Re: African Future WIP

Thanks so much guys Lovely comments

Sorry John, I should have said it's Art Spectrum Coloufix, Terra Cotta colour. I particularly like that shade for most of the African work I do as it seems to do a lot of the work for me. If I get the colour choice wrong to start with, I end up fighting things rather than it just flowing.

I thought I'd put up a few WIP shots up to this point. I did my grid drawing on another sheet of paper and then transfered to the Colourfix. In general I've used pencils mostly but also some sticks for the larger areas. I'm nowhere near as good with sticks as some of you amazing artists.

The colours I've used in the eyes. The tortillon is to fuzz the separation between iris and white as there is never a hard line there.

I do a lot of finger blending in the underlying layers but less so on the top

The colours I've used around the mouth

This is already spectacular!

Thank you so much for sharing the process... it's invaluable to see how the accomplished artists here go about their painting, and so inspiring. I look forward to more!
