Reading The Artist's Magazine for April (an F&W publication, so I don't think they'll mind me posting this), I scanned this letter and answer - I think if you download and magnify in your image programme it should be OK to read

Thanks for posting that, Maureen. They give a really good reason to varnish! It's disappointing though that they didn't go into the importance of an isolation coat before that varnish is applied.

Jamie - it crossed my mind too - I thought it was 'usual' to do the isolation coat!
Maybe they just forgot!
