He had to be retaught how to hold a pencil and paintbrush. Incredible.

As much as I love Alphonse Mucha and Drew Struzan, I don't consider them illustrators, but rather commercial artists. Otherwise, they'd be at the top.

My three:

1. JC Leyendecker
2. Dean Cornwell
3. Frank Frazetta

And I left off so many greats!!

Thanks for that great info RHStanley ... and the link!!

I met Bernie at the Ontario College of Art in 1978 or 79 ( I can't remember which year for sure) He came to the college as part of a visiting lecture series going on at the time.

I couldn't stay for the lecture and when I told Bernie how amazing I thought his work was and how dissapointed I couldn't stay to see it he told me if I could find a room at the school he'd give me a quick showing of his work right then and there!!

I found a room and stood in stunned silence as he unrolled canvas after canvas of brilliant work!! I'l never forget what a great guy he is and an inspiration to so many artists too. He proved to me you could be extremely successful AND a nice person too.

He was from the era of the modern greats (in my opinion ) and was among a group of my favorites at the time.... Robert Heindel and Fred Otnes to name a couple ... http://www.obsessionpublishing.com/

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Great topic!

My first and foremost favorite illustrator is Alex Ross. Hands down the best comic book artist ever to walk this lil blue ball of rock and water.

http://www.alexrossart.com/

Next would be Norman Rockwell. This happens to be my favorite painting by him. (FYI: When I grew up, I married a girl just like the girl in that picture. How's that for an artist influencing someone's life?)

http://www.nrm.org/

The third choce was a killer.... Frank Miller? Frank Frazetta? Vargas? Keith Griffin? Stanley Mouse? Ken Kelly? What a decision!

But then I had to choose the guy that made the biggest impact on me as a 'doodler'. Ladies and Gents, I give you Robert Crumb.

OK that's my 3...

Andrew, thanks for your link! And what a great story! BTW, here's a link to Illustration magazine, they just pulled the issue about Bernie from the stands. If you are interested in Illustration in any way, this is a great magazine to check out. If one does a web search I believe that PDF versions of many early editions can be found.

I too am a big fan of Robert Heindel (Fred Otnes too) and was saddened to learn of his death last year. In the Illustration article, Robert Heindel and many others speak of their awe of Bernie as well as his kindness.

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

I can't stand it . There are too many subcatagories in illustrating.
Ok, here are my top three faves in two subcatagories:

Top three Classics:
Arthur Rackham http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/rackham.htm
Maxfield Parrish http://parrish.artpassions.net/
Norman Rockwell (C.F.Payne, too) http://www.nrm.org/

Top Three (Practicing) Children's Illustrators:
William Joyce-Dinosaur Bob- http://www.harperchildrens.com/willi...e/homepage.htm
Helen Oxenbury-All!-http://www.walkerbooks.co.uk/Helen-Oxenbury

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

First post here and believe me I knocked my brains out narrowing my long list of favorites down. Waaaaaay down!

I like Rachel's way of thinking. You could have a whole thread on cartooning alone. Pat Brady rules...but you can't ignore Berk Breathed!

My additions to this great list:
1. Chris Van Allsburg http://houghtonmifflinbooks.com
2. James Bennett http://www.richardsolomon.com
3. Sebastian Krueger http://www.kruegerdirekt.de

And since I'm a big believer of thumbing your nose at rules...
4. Dru Blair www.drublair.com
He may be a commercial illustrator, but his color buffering theory for airbrush is intense and worth a visit. -Rob

Thanks for thumbing your nose RWSewell.

I'm thrilled to get Krueger's website... I had forgotten how great he is!
I've been a fan of James Bennetts work for years too. (there are some other very fine illustrators at richardsolomon.com too.

While I'm at it here's a great blog done by a friend of mine and he is covering some interesting illustrators in it..

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Alex Ross was a graduate of the Chicago American Art Academy where my son Jason is attending...or should say was attending. Don't know for sure, but my son is getting so many offers now for work, and after his trip to New York's illustrator show he might just go full hilt on his work.

Ross has had a separate hall or display case of his work at the academy for a long time.

Krueger is another that my son has come to know...and is a wonderful generous sort. My son sent me pictures of a workshop some friends of his participated in Europe with Krueger...quite laid back. A good gent.

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Since my tastes lean toward female figures, my favorites would have to be Frank Frazetta, Jeff Scott Campbell, Julie Bell, and Boris Vallejo. And as for the classics, I'm fond of Howard Pyle's skill with pen & ink and Alphonse Mucha's plates... though I'm not sure--does Mucha count as an illustrator?

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Yes , Ben , Mucha certaintly was an illustrator , but much much more than that , a designer of jewelry , architecture , furniture , and of coarse - posters
ads and theatre , designer and artist , those were his "big hits" & "greatest hits" . He did some illus before the "hits" when unknown but also after he did book illustrations for a French book titled Ilsee , He also painted very large murals based on his Czech history , check into it , you'll be amazed !

Mucha was one of my favorites along with Maxfield Parrish and for the comic book guy in me the incredible Wally Wood.

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

My favorites are:
Michael Whelan who is amazing. His work is always so polished and the action if there is action is dramatic but not overdone. It is apparent when he does a cover for a book that he has actually read the book and really makes an effort to make some part of that book come out in his work to the reader. The other wonderful thing about Michael Whelan is his signature, which is a symbol that he uses. It is always fun to find the Whelan mark; it could be in a badge, jewelry, and the spine of a book, carved into a stone, the rivets in a spaceship or anything else.
http://www.michaelwhelan.com/
Rowena Morrill I also like her style, her people are always so well rendered. She doesnít bring a book to life as much as Michael Whelan but sheís still very cool.
http://www.rowenaart.com/
John Pitre Iím not sure if you would classify him as an illustrator. But in the late 1960ís and 1970ís he was a very famous poster artist. His posters were on various political and environmental causes. One poster of his (my favorite) Restrictions has sold over 6 million copies.
