Re: Amaryllis

The star is supposed to be the Amarylis....I sometimes look at the lilies and the fabric more though!

Thank you for the knife comment...I did not realize that it would be controversial but I like that. I think a nice mix of pretty, dainty, soft, ugly, hard, etc. is my taste at the moment.

As for composition, the still life is so traditional in my opinion. I want to try new things. This composition definitely was not designed from the get go; rather, I changed it several times before I was satisfied. Mental note to self: don't do that....do notan sketch first.

Re: Amaryllis

Some good painting here.
Critique: I concur on the fabric, it does not seem to be subject to gravity. The candle is not convincing. The color relationships seem to be localized to the objects. I might be alone, but I think the composition would be better if there is less wall at the top of the frame and more space between the bottom edge and the knife. Is that a chair that the objects are on, with the fabric draped over the chair back?

Re: Amaryllis

All good comments, thank you.

The candle was tough--amorphous shape, little to no color to indicate what the object is, no dead give aways to identify the object...yep...I agree. I wanted a light colored object for the composition and it was handy.

I had a concern about the color relationships as well. So disparate colors....basically all primaries! Dominant blue and reds. This painting started out as an exercise to see if I could paint fabric, flowers and metal in a convincing and articulate way vs. painterly. I could have softened everything, put lots more shadows and soft light...it might have been pleasing to the eye but I was going for something different here.

Good comment on the "less wall at the top" etc. I fretted a lot over the composition....not just the objects and their placement but rather the massive chair oblisk standing against a stark off-white wall with nothing to break up the outline of the fabric draped chair...maybe it is just my internal demons!

You guys are tough! And I appreciate it! This kind of C&C is most helpful, indeed that is why I joined this forum! You all have good eyes!

Re: Amaryllis

I agree with Jon.
The knife bothers me, especially its position. Or this may just be my grandmotherly self speaking.

Re: Amaryllis

Very nice painting zhm. The rendering around the central floral area and blue fabric is really nicely done. If I was to make one crit.. I think you could make this piece even stronger by cropping tighter around the central arrangement and eliminating some of the white wall at top. Nice work either way!

Re: Amaryllis

A really nicely painted work. I think you need to find more self confidence and less self doubt as your work certainly warrants that. Please post more, as I am sure we would all love seeing more of your work.

Cheers,
