Re: The Spotlight - April 2018 - In Memory of Paula Ford

Dea, I really like both paintings, I really like the feel you brought to the barn painting!

Also, thanks for getting the ball rolling, as a beginner I was apprehensive to be the first (yeah, I know there really is no need to be around here!).

I went with the same subject, had some fun and learned some things (both things to keep and what not to do...). This was a fairly quick piece for me as I've been too overloaded, I would really have liked to be able to spend more time to make a few things work a lot better.

Re: The Spotlight - April 2018 - In Memory of Paula Ford

At last I found some time to get my pastels out of the box before this month is over.

Don, thanks for this challenge.
I haven't known Paula because I joined WetCanvas later, but her paintings are beautiful and her teaching thread you linked is very interesting.

Deanna, nicely done and I really enjoyed the ducklings. They look very cute.

Brad, glad you jumped in here.
In this forum you can find so many good teaching threads. And Paulas suggestions to put in the darks first and to choose a rich combination of black, blue, brown and violet colors there are really good. I read in a blog of another painter (Karen Magulis) that she puts in the darkest color, that will appear in the painting, first.
And this habit makes pastel painting much easier
By the way your sky came out really nicely.

Now here is my contribution to this month
All kind of pastels on PastelMat (30 x 40 cm)

C&C always welcome

Esther

Brad, it's nice to see you join this thread and if it was a quick painting, I can't wait to see what happens when you have a bit more time. Please don't be reluctant to post in this forum. We're a supportive group and love to add new members.
Esther, this is one fabulous tribute to Paula. You nailed it!

Brad, Thanks for joining us! Really nice painting! Bold colors in the landscape, nice, subtle clouds in the sky!

Esther, Absolutely lovely!

Thanks everyone
Brad, I like what you did with your sky, I wasn't sure what to do with mine.
Esther, your painting is so inviting. Wish I was there now instead of at work

Dea, love the barn. The roof glows and I get a feeling of heavenly light. What a beautiful painting.

Brad, your barn in the field says HOT to me. The barn hunkers down into the cool of the grasses. Very lovely.

Esther, in your lovely painting I hear peace. The swish and click of the grains and grasses. What a beautiful rendition.

Re: The Spotlight - April 2018 - In Memory of Paula Ford

ok, fast and dirty and down to the wire. Just to be in the spirit of Paula. I used a seascape set of Blue Earth which did not have the lovely field colors but who doesn't love a challenge. All comments welcome. I will add some wildflowers but not today.

Fast and dirty, but successful. I sense the cool weather. It could be winter in the high desert, with the windswept grasses waiting for rain. You may not need flowers, because it tells a story "as is".

Jay, very nicely done! Tree is very well done and contrasts nicely with the background! Simple and every stroke counts!
