"Why?", a WIP

I thought I would share what I am currently working on.

Size is 12"x12", painted on Wallis Belgium Mist. The pastels I am using are my 25pc set of Girault skin tones, as well as my 25pc set of Girault grays, some additional Giraults from my boxes, as well as a few old Grumbachers. I am also using pastel pencils (Derwent, Carb Othello and Giocondas) for feathering and blending, as well as some detail (like the eyes). I think I will probably also pull out some Mount Visions and Great Americans when I start the clothing and background. Not sure what I will use for the hair, we'll see....

The painted areas are not all finished, I keep jumping around and starting new areas before others are finished. I find it keeps me from overworking the painting. Sometimes things are done and you only know it when you put in other areas. Right now there are shadows that might be too dark, and others that might need to be darkened, I'll get there, I promise.....

I'd been avoiding the mouth for a while now, I think that will be my next area of attack...

Yes, there is a back story to this one, though I'm not prepared to talk about it at the moment. It involves a dear friend, and it's not easy to discuss.

Thanks for looking!

It's always a pleasure to watch you develop a portrait, Chris. It looks great so far - there is an emotion behind those eyes already.

Re: "Why?", a WIP

That is already so gorgeous. I don't think I could do something that has that much of an emotional charge. I got upset when I found out a colt I did a painting of died, and I didn't even know the horse beyond just a photo. It's a beautiful portrait already, incredible eyes, so kind, so knowing, and playful it seems.

Chris, this is going to be an amazing portrait! It is already! I like the pose as you can see those wonderful eyes even though she has her glasses on!
I will be pulling up a chair for this one!

Wow - nicely done so far Chris. Will you leave part of it unfinished?

Re: "Why?", a WIP

Thank you Sarah, I appreciate it.

Thanks very much Donna. Yes, a ton of emotion..... it's there in the photo...

Thank you so much Marina. I do love Giraults for portraits, for me there is nothing better.

Thank you so much Alain.

Thanks very much Bill.

Thanks very much Ed.

Thanks Sarah Rose. It is hard but very rewarding to paint something emotional. I enjoy doing it.

Thank you Laurie, I appreciate it.

Thanks very much Barb. I think I will be painting this one entirely, but I'm going to work with edges (lost and found), to keep it interesting.... we'll see.

Re: "Why?", a WIP

hello
- looked up the Giraults ...
> most sensible sets for flesh colours , imho ,
and they don't waste your $ with a whole bunch of blues/greens
but give you a more complete value range with basic skin colours .

looking forward to see how the portrait/head is completed
