Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

.
It occurs to me as I study the Wet Canvas Uploader naming system, that if the website techies added a time parameter to the naming system, iPad users' limitations would be resolved.

I really wish I could use a computer, especially since I'm a computer artist, but I can't, so all I have is this mobile device, or nothing.

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

We have to work with what we have, commercial forum software with limited scope for adaptation and little tech support. We have to work out how to deal with the limitations.

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

They wouldn't have to change the entire naming system for all uploads.

The portion of the name that uses the date (as essentially a nested folder in the system) COULD STAY THE SAME.

All they would have to do is a minor programming adjustment to use the TIME as THE FILE NAME, since iPads (unlike my former computer) don't provide those unique names to your uploader.

Yorky, change doesn't occur unless requested.

I see only positive possibilities coming from any positive suggestion for change.

----------------

Certainly when I left Wet Canvas five years ago because I lost the use of my computer, it wasn't possible to upload from a mobile except through Flickr, etc.

But changes were requested, and changes were made!

Now one more change, USING THE TIME as A UNIQUE FILE NAME, has been requested.

Only good can come of thinking about these things.

Out loud.

----------------

How to solve a problem 101:

Identify the problem: lack of a unique file name from a mobile device.

Think of a simple solution: use the time of the upload as the file name

.

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

I'm afraid repeated requests for tweaks have fallen on stony ground. Parts of the content are inaccessible due to a botched upgrade some years ago and can't be fixed.

That's a sad loss Yorky. I'm so sorry.

Communication, however is the spice of life, and I have the right to communicate my positive thoughts here, just as you have the right to present the debate for the current status.

It took how many years to fix the avatar issue? But it got done, so anything's possible!

I was just reviewing the opening post in this thread, and this jumped out at me.

It is currently the first line, in the first post, on the first page of this thread, and it is wrong.

As shown in my tests earlier today, near the bottom of page 3, the system does NOT overwrite the first image upload of the day with the second one.

Rather, the first one of the day remains the ONLY one available that day no matter what you do next.

This is an important distinction because yesterday, relying on the info quoted above, I tried to upload a smaller version of an image I had just uploaded, because I felt that my first version was unnecessarily large. I was told to expect an overwrite, and that is what I wanted.

I expected that the system would overwrite as you indicate in the quote from the first line on the first page.

But it doesn't. It ignores.

So those of us in my situation need to be careful to get it right THE FIRST TIME because no overwrites will occur, even if we want them.

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

Semantics. If you load two different pictures on the same day from the ipad it replaces the old with the new. Use the Manage Attachments in separate posts and it doesn't.

No it does NOT "replace the old with the new."

I have absolutely, positively PROVEN that today, as described.

The first one - which you are calling the "old" one, does NOT get replaced.

I repeat: I've absolutely, positively PROVEN that today.

The "old" (first) one is the ONLY one, as far as the system is concerned.

---------------------

In my previous post, I explained why this is an important distinction.

And, again, I refer you to my color swatch tests at the bottom of page 3 (done just a few minutes ago). Take a moment to study them and think this through. THEY ARE PROOF and THEY ARE IMPORTANT.

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

And Yorky, you keep telling me to use attachments, but I'm assuming they would have to be attached 'from' somewhere else, such as Flickr.

If so, no way am I doing that. I left Wet Canvas for five years to avoid doing that.

If I'm incorrect, please forgive, and tell me what you mean by "attachment".

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

The manage attachments uses the same uploader but files the picture with a unique filename. You browse for the picture or in this case select the photo from your ipad.

Re: Uploading pictures from the iPad

Thanks Yorky.

I see nothing called "Manage Attachments."

I've changed my options back and forth from Standard to Enhanced.

I see no such option. I'm not doubting you. A person on a thread I just posted to - she used attachments. But I can't find anything that would allow me to do that.

What does it look like?

Yeah, but here are the options:

--------------------

- Show your signature (checked)

- Automatically parse links in text (checked)

- Disable smilies in text (not checked)

- Thread subscription (instant e-mail....)

-------------------

That's it. That's all that is in the box.
