loyd

edit: much faster, approx. 7 secs in IE. Let's see if it stays consistent.

Ok, summary of today's changes:

I've left the home page pretty much intact, because I think it looks cool.

The headers on subsequent pages (forums, etc) have had their colorful buttons replaced with tasteful text links. This should make loading a bit faster. I've also replaced the images at the top with smaller, less colorful-yet-still-effective-looking images.

Finally, I've increased the physical system resources on the web server - we are hitting peak times with between 400-500 folks on at one time. Things should run a wee bit smoother.

Keep me posted ...

Actually, the test style is no longer needed - go ahead and switch back to the Default style ...

ditched the menu images on the new test template eh? like I suggested from the beggining but many argued with until, I suggested no frills.. now 'scotts test' a mix of both.. the way it should have been in the first place.. you just cant put hundreds of images on every page of a large dynamically created community web site... agreed?

Actually, it had nothing to do with the number of images on the page. Images, in theory, should be cached by your browser. I can put 1,000 images on a page, and your browser, if configured properly, should cache them all. In refreshing the page, your browser should behave properly and pull them from the cache. Yes, even on a dynamically-generated page (images are always cached).

There were a number of things which contributed to the slowdown, many of which have been discussed here. I decided to remove the images because many of our members are still over dialup, and that represented a nice 15K savings. Not a lot of space, but every little bit helps when you're over dialup. The images had nothing to do with the slowdowns experienced by even our broadband customers.

The bulk of the slowdown issues were resolved by correcting Apache's mod_rewrite behavior of adding a "Vary" header, as well as increasing the physical number of web server processes available to serve people.

Scott

Scott, whatever you did worked for me! This is the first time since the new site came up that I am NOT experiencing ANY slowdown--things are just popping up and moving nicely! I'm on a cable connection, not dial-up!!

Thanks!!! I love WetCanvas!!!

if an image is properly cached, the browser still has to check the server to see if there is a newer image that should be displayed instead.. the more images the more times the browser has to check for a newer version before displaying... ( wether it downloads it or not) still slowing down the page load... even if the network bandwidth wasnt an issue.

Yes, but this is an fairly instantaneous process, even with the addition of a dozen or so new images. Adding 12 images to a page should not make it load 20-60 seconds slower. And indeed, that wasn't the cause of the slowdown.
