Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

Spike - awesome that you are liking the rembrandts. I didn't want to invest in a set of artist grade pastels yet until I had a chance to try a few. I just realized my local independent art store has a selection of Rembrandts in open stock I may get two or three in a few weeks to try out.

Mark - Thanks for letting me know how you use the XLs. They look like they would be pretty fun to experiment with. I might give it a try.

Virginie - That seems like a really good deal! I have heard of oil bars but have never seen them in person or used them. Beautiful colors

To report my latest acquisition, I was delighted to find General's All Art Sharpeners in my local art store so I picked up one of those, a four pack of Conte crayons to see if I like them as a medium, and a new Faber Castell kneaded eraser. I also placed a medium-sized order for several Derwent Procolour colored pencils from open-stock (lightfast ones - about 18 or so) and the white/cream/tan-colored Luminance pencils (8 Luminance in all).

I am in a phase where I am actually drawing quite a bit and really interested in exploring all different mediums, although I am really enjoying just using graphite at the moment. I am trying to "sample" the different mediums instead of purchasing whole sets, to make it budget-friendly for myself.

I will post a photo once my order comes in. Oh, and I also purchased 8 rechargeable batteries for my indispensable electric eraser + a charger for them.

Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

Marksmom, what a haul! Congratulations!

I hope you enjoy the oilbars. I recently got some Kamas to go with the WN's, and haven't had time to work with them...

I was just gifted gently used (or not ) items of various media: looks like a split palette of gouash, 3 reds, blues, yellows, and a green, burnt sienna, raw umber, white and black. Nice, because I've recently been working with WC.
A sack of generally liquitex acrylic paint, so with what I had already, I shouldn't need more. ever... box of 16 pentel oil pastels. Those should fit in with all the other sets--grumbacher, artist, gallery, etc...
12 sakura special water colors in tubes, hard in the tubes, but since watercolor, shouldn't they be useable? What is the quality, anyone know?
some large brushes
2 bottles of gesso,
several stretched canvases, ~ 11x14"
a few art books
a almost unused sketch book--I've never had a real sketchbook!
a 12x14" canson mixed media paper pad, most used on one side, the other is all for me!
tools for use with clay sculpting, and 3 books to go along.
Also, a no name french type easel. Heavy sucker! I may put that on my patio with acrylic paint in it. It's too heavy for me to cart around.

A few days ago I was given jewelry makings...

my cup runneth over!

Sakura are student quality watercolours, and many of the colours are not lightfast (though this may or may not worry you). I'm not sure if Sakura's tube paints use the same formulation as the paint in their little white box pan sets.

If you cut the tubes open and dig out the colour and pack it into the wells of a spare plastic palette, you should be able to just use them like pan colours. They may not be quite as vibrant as fresh colour out of the tube but you could probably at least use them for sketching, rather than throwing them out.

Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

Rebecca, thanks. I'll probably do that. I don't like tossing usable items.
I should have said they do appear to be a child's first set. When I googled it, koi was part of the name. This doesn't have "koi" anyplace on the box, but there is a comic drawing of a fish, and the window into the box is a circle cut from that drawing.

Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

I had two orders of art supplies arrive this week (one yesterday and one today). Here's my total haul:

-Daler-Rowney Georgian Water-Mixable Oils (just a set of small tubes so I can try them, as I haven't used watersoluble oil paints before)
-An Ampersand Pastelbord panel (I have a few small ones but wanted a big one for a project I'm planning)
-2 Winsor & Newton Watercolour Markers
-3 coloured pencils: A Derwent Procolour Chinese White, a Caran d'Ache Museum in Emerald Green and a CDA Luminance in Olive Brown. Those two CDA pencils were the last I needed to complete the respective ranges, while the Derwent White was so I could properly test the 12 colour set of Procolours I got last year (which did not include a white).
-Set of 5 Mount Vision Dark Iridescent Soft Pastels
-A few cheap synthetic brushes for applying masking fluid
-A large Mottler brush for applying varnish (Jackson's had a discount promotion on it)
-Some Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic samples, including their Cadmium Free paints
-A handful of empty half pans
-Two Daniel Smith Interference watercolours: Copper and Green
-Daniel Smith Yellow Ochre to replace the tube I used up
-A tube of Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold... with PO49!
-A Schmincke full pan
-A Rembrandt tube

Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

This afternoon Dad needed to go to a hardware shop near his work, which is also near an art shop, so I went along and picked up a few more goodies.

I didn't go into the hardware store with him (I find hardware stores boring )

The box has a stacking set of porcelain dish palettes. I already had a set of 5 but I find that I mix up enough colours that I end up needing to stop half way through a painting and clean some out to mix up new colours, so I got more so I can have as many colours going at once as I like.

Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

Yesterday I bought some markers at tgr - Flying Tiger Copenhagen. That place is fun to buy cheap art supplies at. I have bought some really nice sketchbooks there too.

Re: Art Supply Addicts Anonymous - 2018

Hobby Lobby has clearenced their frames to 90% off. Of all the shopping I have done there, I have never before looked at their frames. I bought sixteen, sizes 30x40, 20x24 and 16x20. I paid $120 for them all. Much quicker and cheaper than I can build them myself.. And they are beautiful, wide frames. Check it out, some great deals to be had.
