Re: Hi - Basket weaver here!

I have made baskets but not by weaving them. I love woven baskets and have a lot of them around my house.
My favourite is a "big Blue Moma" basket from Ghana. It is small and bright coloured and I use it as a yarn bowl.
Please show us your baskets!

Cool site, LenaB! I've never heard of big Blue Moma before, so I'll have fun looking around their site.

Here's a crappy photo of the basket I'm currently working on. It's a miniature in 4-ply waxed linen. Not sure why it uploads sideways.

Well it is round so it doesn't really have a right side

I love the colours you are using. And such tight weaving, my fingers hurt to look at it.

Re: Hi - Basket weaver here!

Nothing as elaborate as what you’re doing. I’ve made a few small baskets out of vines that were growing over the neighbor’s fence and into my yard. The vines shrank as they dried so that the weaving was loose and rattled around. Then they got moldy and died. I also made a coiled basket out of grass that I like to put walnuts in when I’m having a snack. It’s still in good condition after several years, although the green color faded to yellow eventually. I would say that my baskets are more in the style of “rustic survivalist with too much time on their hands.”

Re: Hi - Basket weaver here!

wow, I can't believe this old post came up. Thank you all for the kind comments.

LenaB - with these minis it's not the hands that hurt, it's the eyes! I can only work on them about an hour a day.

Zabedoll, I'm always experimenting with what I refer to as 'naturals'... things from my garden. I've woven with things like daylily and iris leaves, cattail leaves, honeysuckle vine, grapevine, willow, etc. It's all fun. I planted my own basketry willow in 2010 -- tough work but worth it in the end.

I took up painting again right after I started this post, so I haven't made many baskets over that time. I did just finish these two -- an egg basket for my sister and a scraps basket as a gift for someone who I just met that admired my tote basket. lol!

Again, no matter how I rotate the image it always displays upside-down. Sorry.
