I dont think you need help with the eyes: you need help with the galzing technique.

The pencil drawing is a good likeness

I believe that. When I look to your drawing I see that you already understand perfectly how values work. So, my sugestion is to forget the pencil (except for the first drawing, of course) and make a verdaccio in oils. Since you know to read values, it is much easier than drawing it as you did here.

After this you glaze it. Simple. I can help, if you want.
Regards.
Rui.

CatEyes, I don't think using a grid will produce beautiful results. I have a great reference book and some pieces of paper that I'll use to draw flowers on. I think this is the choice of all virtuous artists.

Re: The Portrait Gallery, June 2005

Thank you all for your generous comments. I do feel a real beginner compared to the exalted company in which I find myself . i should have said that its in oils. I am very out of practice with oils and find myself getting very impatient with drying times!

Rui - I would love to have a go at this with a verdaccio. I have no idea where to start, what colours. I had considered a grisaille but coward that I am I chickened out. Any advice you have on glazes would be very welcome!

Rui, you make it sound so easy! I will be eager to hear your advice, as I am interested in glazing as well.

Anita, the drawing is lovely. You have a good start on your oil, and I'll be watching you develop this with much interest.

Tia, thanks for the feedback! That eye definitely needs work.

Mother with Child

Hi all,
Mother with Child is an 18x24” oil on canvas.
This is the completed work from the WIP posted elsewhere.
Critiques always welcome.

Jerome, you already know how much I adore this painting, but I want to say it again. I just love the way you have placed the mother's arms and hands in such a loving way around her baby. Also I love the way you have painted the baby -- it looks so much like a little almost newborn baby. And I also love the way you have painted the blanket around the baby. Your lighting and shadows are also very, very interesting. A wonderful Portrait.

With the green glaze - neutralized wonderfully but her cooler skin tones now have strong green tint!
This still may only be a practice piece - think that is helping as I am not agonising over every brush stroke. I would really like to try the verdicchio technique Rui suggested.
I'm still not really happy with the eyes - they look fake!

Re: The Portrait Gallery, June 2005

Jerome, a terrific finish on this! I like being able to see just a peek of that infant's eye and ear. The only small comment I have is that the shadow on her cheek shows the cheek to be very angular, rather than rounded. A wonderful portrait, thanks for posting it here!

Anita, as far as the eyes - I don't know how it appears in real life, but on my screen, the light value of the lower lids makes that area puffy. Slightly lowering that value might work. Is it possible that the neck has been elongated? From the drawing that you posted, it appears so. I hope you will show WIP's if you do try a verdacchio. I'd love to see them.

Oh yes Anita, if you do a Verdacchio, I sure do hope you will do it as a WIP too, as I would also love to see it, and I know everyone else would too.

Please do more portraits, Andrew! You have a wonderful touch with your brushes. I visited your web site - very lovely work there.

This is Sophia updated. I am not finished, but I am pleased because I feel I have her likeness down.

Hi Eileen,

Little Sophia is coming along beautifully. I particularly like the way you have painted her hair -- very lifelike.
Looking forward to your next update.
