Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

I haven't worked on my panpastels in a while but tried something other than a landscape. Here is my piece I did today. All C&C are welcome.

Barn after Albert Handell, X-post from soft pastel forum

Hi,
I found the Soft Pastel forum and am overwhelmed about the gems you can find there! Have got some time to test my Pans as well, a couple of times. Here a barn after a pastel painting tutorial book of Albert Handell - found the old book on a german flea-market!
This is on PastelMat, brownish, quite a small size. Changed the ref. a bit.

Had only a white pastel pen and charcoal for the details. I guess I could give more texture to the foreground? After I painted this, I bought a set of Polychromos sticks. Keeping my palette limited, as I don't know yet if I can become a real pastel painter ... at least I can experiment with my not-so-good watercolor paintings as well, painting over

Critics and advice welcome!

Lori Anne & Raxu, so nice to see you in the forum. It has been so very quiet here. Lori, getting out of your comfort zone & trying new things can be fun and it looks like you did have some with your little fellow - - nice job.

Raxu, your Handell ref worked out superbly! Like everything about this, keep it up, looking forward to seeing more.

I have done a new piece also, using mainly pans with some small detail touches with sticks. If you would like to take a peek, it is posted at: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/show....php?t=1315285

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

LinettaLee, thank you for your fedback, I do appreciate it, as a newbie. And I already thought this PanPastel thread is all dead and buried, there haven't been many postings lately. So this was a nice surprise.
Yes, I will keep on experimenting. Love the pans, and now that I have some Polychromos sticks as well I might get better/more interesting results.

Love your bleading heart painting, already commented it. Hope you did not mind me giving some ideas about new possibilities! It's a lovely painting, I am sorry for your loss.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

raxu, i just got some matt board from hobby lobby cheap. It was their scrap pieces I think. I was thinking of trying pans on them. Glad to hear they worked well for you. I love your barn and the wispiness of your grasses. Great job!

Linettalee, thank you for your encouragement. I'm going to head off to your link. I've seen some of your work on this site and I sure do love your work and your tips. Thank you.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Lori Anne, looking forward to your next ones. Just noticed I have not commented yout latest works here. You have a good eye for color harmony!
BTW is it possible your photos are a bit blurry?

Why don't we just do some small experimental pieces, I think at least for me it would work. Every time I think "oh well, this is only an exercise" I get better results than trying hard... I will show you tomorrow a piece I have been improving and mis-improving many times - instead of that, I should have forgotten it and started a new one. On the other hand, I am a newbie in pastels, so every msitake I make is actually good !

This one is a result of that kind of a loose touch: I wanted to show my friend ho easy it is to work with pans - and made this in less than 3 minutes, not even planning what I would paint! This is on watercolor paper Arches (just happened to lie on the table ), size about 6x8" only

The black is charcoal.

C&C welcome!

WOW, Misty Mountain! I did not in anyway expect this spectacular waterfall. Love your composition and the softness ... especially love the mist & light in the upper portion. You falling water is wonderful, too. I am so excited to see action in this forum, thought I was all alone out there.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Misty Mountain, your waterfall is wonderfully misty, very good sense of movement as well.

Here the effort I mentioned yesterday, with too much effort - I wish I could have done this as lightly as the pear I posted . Anyway, this is PanPastels with a touch of Polychromos pastel sticks. I also have now a couple (less than 10) of soft pastel sticks (Jaxell) so I used the white jaxell for last finishes of the clouds. That might not have been ver wise, yet I'm still learning.

This painting shows a field way in Germany/Rhineland, where we lived for some years. Painted on Clairefontaine PastelMat 12x15,5".

c&C welcome.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Misty Mountain, you must have taken Johanne's Paintalong as well. Nicely done.

Here is mine. Not real please with it but I'm still practicing and learning. This is done on 9x12 colorfix paper. It was toned in a tan color. I was thinking I wanted more of the muddy yellow color in the water. I may have gotten the back falls a little too purpley.

My photo's are pretty clear. I think between my eyes and shakey hands, I end up with more blur. I did get some larger paper to try. Maybe I can get a crisper look with that. Course I guess some of the blur could be my camera and shakey hands. I was just reading to take really good pictures of your art work you should use a tripod. Maybe time to try that.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Oh goodness, looking at this now on WetCanvas I see a big no, no, that Johannes taught us. No "V"s. I have a big one with the rocks and bushes at the bottom of the back falls. A painting killer for sure. LOL Funny how by not looking at something for days and going back you see all the flaws.

I to have been following Jo's paint-a-longs. He got me hooked on pan pastels. Luckly you can go back and fix things like the V shapes. Funny how you don't see them untill you have posted your pics.

Whoa! Edited to add that I think your waterfall is gorgeous, Linda! Lori Anne and Misty Mountain, very nice! I'm so glad Johannes has taken up the Pans! Aren't they fun? All these paintings are great.

Raxu, love seeing your experiments, too. PastelMat and Pans are made for each other, of course, but I like that pear on the Arches! I was a student of Albert Handell's (years ago) and learned so much from his work. I like your barn.

I came in here to let you all know that currently I have a lot of the Sofft Applicators, sponges and the knives, as well as the Pan trays AND a few of the Pans offered in the Swap Shop. Look here.

(Note: after they sell, the listing is taken down, so if you click the link and it goes nowhere you understand.)
