it's so Cracked

good morning all

in air dry clay, i've finished a horse sculpture, but unfortunately it's now taken to cracking. two legs have fallen off, and there are other areas where large cracks have appeared. i let it dry slowly, wrapping it after each work session, and now i just want to toss it. does anyone have any suggestions for me? thank you for listening.

Hi! I have not used air dry clay before, although I have some to try one of these days when I get to it!

If you are using something like paper clay, this blog seems to have some good tips, maybe you will get some clues there?

Re: it's so Cracked

It sucks when clay does this! I'm currently in the middle of repairing one of my own sculptures (I'm using polymer clay for that one and the armature wasn't stable enough to prevent cracking in the oven.

If you're using paper clay (like LaDoll, Premier or Das), cracking can happen when you try to dry layers that are too thick. Paper clay shrinks when drying and so if the outer layer is cured, but inside it's still wet, there's no way for the clay to go. To prevent this, when I still used to work with this stuff, I would work with small layers, letting them dry completely in between.

The good news is that paper clay cracks are very easy to fix. Just let your sculpture dry completely and then fill up the cracks with new clay. For the legs that have fallen off, gluing them and then 'hiding' the fracture line with new clay is the best way to go.
This stuff is very soft when cured, so sanding is going to be easy. And you can always add more clay later.
