I was browsing around wetcanvas last week and came across a stickie in the Landscape section that blew me away. I have been in heaven since searching through the huge amount of painters listed by the contributors and in awe of the amount of great painters that have/are painting the landscape around us that without the thread I would not have known about. Here’s a link on the off chance some may not have seen it (if you haven’t you are in for a treat):
https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=442394Firstly, thank you Larry Seiler for the stickie and les lull for starting the thread. Secondly I was wandering, as painting outdoors is my passion, which plein air artists have floated your boat or most influenced you over the years?
For my two pennies worth I was bowled over by (among others):
Jie Xiangyuan
…and Edward Seago

Should be an interesting thread!
April 26, 2010 at 7:59 am #1139863April 26, 2010 at 12:08 pm #1139870My main influences have been Edward Seago,JMW Turner, Walter Sickert, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Whistler and Sargent and of course my friend and colleague in the Wapping Group, Trevor Chamberlain. Contemporay artists who have written books which have been valauable include Richard Pikesley, Bernard Dunstan, Tom Coates David Curtis and particularly Ken Howard RA whose work is shown below.
He truly conveys a convincing sense of place with such economy and sureness of touch!
Michael Richardson
Constructive and informed criticism is requested. I am here to learn and will not be offended:)

Michael Richardson's oils and watercolours and Michael's Blog and painting holidaysApril 27, 2010 at 2:29 am #1139872Thanks for starting this thread. It’s hard to find info on good plein air painters.
Those are some awesome painters, Studio 1-F. I had heard of Nathan Fowkes, but not the other two. It seems you and I have very similar tastes.
I can definitely see Ken Howard’s influence in your work, Micheal.
One of my favorites is Barry John Raybould. http://www.bjrgallery.com/

I’m not aware of having “a” favorite, yet many mentioned I have links on my blog to.Its like….a favorite color. Does everyone here have a favorite color? I get asked that a lot, and my standard answer is…”yes, the one I need at the moment!”
I did see this one by Chamberlain, and was like…dang, that’s nice!!!
I suppose I have my favorites since I refer to them constantly and in part, they were also amazing teachers…like Edgar Payne and Emile A. Gruppe…

and carried this habit into his 80’s…Redfield-

April 28, 2010 at 8:04 am #1139871Once again, out of nowhere a whole new load of greats to study! That Ken Howard of the chap reading the newspaper near the beach is a gem. He is fantastic at grabbing a moment. There is a small study of Venice in his great book ‘Inspired by Light’ which is similarly simple but conveys so much. I also like Trevor Chamberlains’ works and am lucky enough to have an old copy of his book ‘Oils’ which was done with Ranson.
I also seem to be besotted with Frank DuMond and his legacy which is going strong in the US still. I love contemporary US plein air art in the DuMond style. Too many great ones to list here.
I am now going to spend the next few days enjoying some of the above links!April 29, 2010 at 5:47 pm #1139875Love Ken Howard, Trevor Chamberlain, Edward Seago, Michael Richardson, Michael Maguire, Dan Corey, David Curtis, Bill Cramer, Bill Wray, Frank Gardner, Marc Hanson to name but a few.
