Go to a DIY store and look through their paints section, you will find samples (strips of card with varying tones of colour), cant remember their correct name, but they are free to take away so I would grab handfulls of the colours you like, at home you can take your time to decide on the colours which suit you and your personality, you can really make a huge impact in a place with carefully chosen colour, don't be afraid of darker colours to mix with lighter ones, many people stick to boring creams and I think thats a shame. In my bedroom I have a wonderfull dark tobacco gold on one side of the room with a complimentary lighter colour on the other side and it looks amazing, especially with the dark red paintings that I have put up.

Then I would decide on what is going to be the focal point in your room, is it your sofa, or a painting? and plan everything around that. Sometimes its a good idea if you have a large wall that you are planning on placing some artwork on to buy the artwork first, then you can pick up pieces that work nicely with the colours in your artwork, cushions, throws etc, nothing too expensive but something that will tie everything nicely together.

Just a couple of ideas..hope this helps.

Cool and unique ideas here Katie! Hopefully, I can perfectly manage the color and decoration ideas for my home. I think I have to start with with a concept, right?

Don't feel you need to do it all at once. Instead, save up for a piece at a time, so you can get good quality items that'll last a long time. In the meantime, you can add little touches around the house to personalize it while you're working on turning it into your dream home.

- slipcovers for your couches, with different pillows in your favourite colours.
- trinkets or small decorative items are a nice touch on bookshelves
- funky tablecloths with an arrangement of candles or fake flowers in a vase as a centrepiece.
- art can be expensive, so you can hang a few mirrors with a cool frame while you're saving up to buy art you love.
- For a cheap kitchen makeover, you can repaint your cabinet doors, and change the handles and drawer pulls
- find furniture that's still in good condition at yard sales or thrift stores and then make it your own by restaining/repainting.

I truly agree with you Geekette. It's very costly if I'll do it all at once that's why I'm planning to buy one at a time. Your advice came just right! Thanks!
