This 9×12 on primed panel is a preparatory version for the 18×24 to come. The original scene was done in Pastel, and this helps me make changes for the oil painting to come and to sort out many things in advance.
One change made is that the background area has been pushed back and opens up to a far mountain.
As usual, some small bits have been refined after paint sets,- the final image is posted further down the thread.

January 17, 2019 at 9:57 pm #764465Thank you Tom! This is from reference and two plein-air studies. I travel out nearly every Summer for several weeks to paint, teach Workshops, and visit with friends. I lived in Northern CO for 8 years and loved it-

January 18, 2019 at 9:12 am #764467Thanks very much Asdo! It is a great river and probably better for fishing- this stretch is about 15-20 miles going up.

I live in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, which is fairly flat and mostly forests, pastures and farm fields outside the cities. However, we visit national parks every year, often out west, and I paint a lot of landscapes from reference photos that I take when traveling.

January 18, 2019 at 11:10 am #764489zooming in the light on the left wall next to the water is beautiful, a faint glow reflected from the pond is just felt. very good!

Comments and Criticism always welcome!January 18, 2019 at 3:19 pm #764468Thanks Tom! It is a great effort to do it, but as I enter Wyoming, all my concerns just disappear- keep going, it’s good for your soul. (See the new image below)

Comments or Critiques welcomed...always!January 18, 2019 at 3:27 pm #764471Thank you TWAdair– I like all of them, like children I suppose. After painting a while on this and picking up a few good ideas, I did some subtle rework of the small 9×12 pastel. (Refinements have made, and a new update image below).
