Second attempt at a still life using oil. This is on a 9×12″ wood panel. Any suggestions for improvement would be much appreciated. Thank you for looking.
BobJanuary 14, 2019 at 6:10 pm #762928I love the composition and the nice vivid colours.

Thank you Magnus. My concern is with the table top. Seems to bright and monolithic. I also think the apple on the right needs some help.

I rather like the bright monolithic nature of the table top. Along with the dark monolithic background and the simplicity of the lines between them, it makes a nice foil for the more intricate shapes and colours in the subject and doesn’t distract from the bowl of fruit.
The apple on the right perhaps looks slightly flat compared to the fruits in the bowl. Maybe the value range within it could be increased a bit to get a stronger sense of the modelling? On the other hand, as it stands it contrasts nicely with both the lighter tone of the table top and the darker tone of the shadow which helps to connect it with the bowl.

Thank you once again Magnus for your comments on the table top and background and your suggestions for the apple. I believe I will work on the values of the apple to give it more form and may consider some yellow green near the stem. I want to be careful not to draw too much attention to it though. After those changes I think I will call it done. So very nice to have support from other artists.

January 16, 2019 at 2:42 pm #762943Looks good man. You might want to straighten the raised ribs on the fron part of the bowl. Not necessarily sharpen them to bring attn, but straighten.
The top “elipse” on the top of the bowl seems to be drawn really well. Better than anything I’ve been able to do as of yet. Also maybe try looking at the bottom elipse.
But overall, looks really good and has really, really strong shapes and cohesiveness.January 17, 2019 at 5:56 am #762936Looks good man. You might want to straighten the raised ribs on the fron part of the bowl. Not necessarily sharpen them to bring attn, but straighten.

But overall, looks really good and has really, really strong shapes and cohesiveness.Thank you Zippoah for your comments. Since creating the original post I have made a few corrections to the painting. One change I made was the ellipse on the base of the bowl. Thank you for mentioning it, it confirms what I had seen. The distance between the ribs at the rim of the bowl is wider than at the base because the diameter the base is smaller so that should cause the ribs to angle inwards. I will take a closer look at the ribs to see if they need to be changed. Thank you for the observation.
January 17, 2019 at 1:24 pm #762932I can only suggest or repeat from other experienced artists. The shadow of the bowl may be too dark, or the table is too bright. The shadows should be more “mysterious”, blurred, and transparent. The apple may need more values to create more volume.

Thank you Moises, I agree that the shadow of the bowl may be too dark. I will see if I can lighten it some. In the reworked version of this painting I have darkened and de-saturated the table cloth somewhat.
January 21, 2019 at 5:13 pm #762931Very nice Bobby: you have some good advice. The photo actually looks a tad out of focus for my old eyes?

I like your nice direct approach.Thank you Derek. Yes, its wonderful to have a group of fellow artist provide feedback for improvement. I agree with you, the photo is a bit out of focus.
January 24, 2019 at 6:49 am #762942I am not an experienced artist at all. So, take my suggestion lightly as it may not be a correct direction.
But here it is: I think the table top seems flat. In other words it does not seem receding towards the background. If you were to gradually tone down and cool the yellow as you go away from the front end towards back, it might give better perspective.
Otherwise, it is a nice work.C&C always welcome

Otherwise, it is a nice work.Thank you Shenko for your comment. I felt the same as you, so a week or so ago I changed the table top to be a little darker towards the back and softened the edges to visually push it back some.
