The waxiness of the pencils wouldn't be a problem? Or you just don't worry about that?

Nope...at times I have used a fixative on graphite so the black does not contaminate the paint, but the pencils are only the foundation of this sort of thing...the paint is opaque (well most of it) and lays over the pencils like cement over a mob hit.

I can build up layers or I can use thinned out acrylics and detail with pencils over THAT once it has dried.

There are a myriad of ways to goof around with art. If any instructor tells you there are rules...kick 'im in the nuts. You experiment and find what works for you and have fun.
