Isabella and Her Basil Pot

I've been going through some old images, and found this one. Can't remember when I made it, it must have been at least ten years ago. It's oil pastel on cartridge paper, I think I've still got the original in a folder somewhere.
The story's quite dark; Isabella was the daughter of a noble family, betrothed to an aristocratic lord, but she fell in love with one of her brother's servants. Her brother found out and murdered him, but his ghost came to Isabella in a dream and showed her where he was buried. She exhumed his head and buried it in a pot of basil, and as the basil tree grew, her grief turned poor Isabella mad.

Tragic. But a nice painting.
I've never tried the oil pastels, how are they to work with and how do you get nice blends?

Re: Isabella and Her Basil Pot

I found them a bit tricky, as they didn't respond like either oil paints or soft pastels. My personal technique involved using them a bit like coloured pencils, drawing and filling in areas, and laying them down quite thickly. I used a small amount of white spirit on a brush to get smoother blending. TBH, I haven't used oil pastels since I did this piece.

What a fantastic story. There is such pathos in this piece,it's beautifully rendered too. Love the detail of the skulls along the pot.

Great expression on Isabella's face. Reminded me instantly of a painting by William Holman Hunt that I haven't thought about in years. I do love the Pre-Raphaelites

That is indeed a stunning painting, and it was the piece that I had in mind when making this.
