Sokura's Pet

In THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, the evil magician, Sokura (Torin Thatcher) had a pet dragon that was one hundred feet in length. I thought it would be fun to paint Sokura and his pet when the little guy had just hatched out of the egg....something you didn't see in the movie, of course, but that's half the fun of drawing and painting these things.

Acrylics on a 16 x 24 piece of watercolor paper.

Business as usual except I wanted to toy with a shallow focus effect, so I made sure that all the edges on Sokura's portrait were soft and only defined the edges on the little dragon hatchling.

Ok first of all you do such awesome stuff!
It looks like you did some doodling in digital on this.
I circled the things that caught my eye.

The black line(s) under the eye of the magician and the red eyebrow on the dragon.

The red line on the brow of the dragon is intentional. The picture below shows the adult dragon as he appeared in the film and you can see the big reddish brow over the eye. My idea was to show the earliest stage of that effecft...he just hatched after all...lol. Because I post mostly in websites and groups who are familiar with the creatures, I keep forgetting that someone may not be familiar with the cinematic origins.

(As far as the "lines" underneath the magicians eye...I never get that detailed in my stuff...mostly I just slap on the paint and wherever it falls...good. ) Now if you had said something about the line of black going up the belly and neck of the baby dragon, I'd have to agree....

Re: Sokura's Pet

Thank you!! By keeping the eggshell and the dragon baby (pup?) with hard edged lines and softening the magician's head and face, I somewhat succeeded in creating that shallow focus effect I was after.

That eggshell looks as hard as stone. Nice
