Hi, I have quite a few good-quality black wood frames (different sizes, with linen liners) and I want to paint them gold – some solid gold and also some with a distressed gold look.
I bought a spray can which worked great for both looks, but it’s messy, needs ventilation, etc.
I also bought some cheap “craft” gold paint and I got a decent “distressed” gold look, but it took 4 coats to get the coverage I wanted (not heavy coverage, with some of the black showing through).
I definitely want to paint the gold on, as it will be easier for me to do. Any suggestions regarding good (inexpensive) gold paints?
Thanks,
Jim

April 24, 2018 at 11:10 am #609815Hmm. It looks like it could work, but it’s just 15ml for almost $7, not to mention shipping unless I can find it locally. How many frames (11×14, 16×20) would it cover. It got good reviews on Amazon. I see there is Antique Gold and Gold Leaf … is Gold leaf the better bet?
April 24, 2018 at 11:20 am #609810I’m not a big fan of bright Gold, so I always use the Antique gold.
As far as how many frames it would cover….you got me buddy. I haven’t tested it. Like I said; if you prime first you will get more mileage out of the paint. I buy the 11 oz. can. I’ve seen it for $5.99 up to $8.99.

I always spray with lots of ventilation or outside in my driveway. I don’t find it messy at all?Website: www.artderek.com

https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1431363April 24, 2018 at 12:31 pm #609818I found it online at Michaels and a few other places. It looks good.
I tried spraying two frames before in my shed on the floor (door opened), but missed a few spots, because of the light. Also, I had to spray the top, insides and outsides.
April 24, 2018 at 1:07 pm #609812April 26, 2018 at 5:03 pm #609808I had a frame on which I had some dings, because of mistakes in repair work I had tried to do on it. It was a champagne color, and I couldn’t match it with oil paint.
So, I decided what the heck, nothing I can do will be any worse that it is now.
I bought a spray can of Rustoleum Gold Paint at the local hardware store, and I took it into the alley to spray my frame with it.
I found it to be excellent, and it saved my frame. This is only acceptable if you appreciate a shiny, gold finish. There is no mottling, nor antiquing with this color–it is just a very shiny gold! But, if you like that, as I do, this spray is quite remarkable, especially for something marked, “Rustoleum”.

decorative frames I spray with an antique gold. Then when dry paint them with a black stain or paint, then wipe off the paint, so that the black only stays in the low areas and crevices. The effect imo is much better than a solid gold.

It made for a richer gold color. I found similar results using Rub-N-Buf over red.
