How to arrange model, composition and idea to create the reference we need??

Hello there!
When it comes to drawing and painting the most dififcult thing for me is translating the idea to a nature reference to use for painting.
Example, i have the idea to paint a figure female with wings surrounded by angel.
After the sketch on paper and some composition attempts, how do i develop an image reference to use in paint (or to make it my final painting, just because classical rendering painting need well balanced proportion so its better to keep human realistically, imo).
How do i setup the model to get what i want?
I am missing this point, i rate myself 2/10 on this!
Anyone could help me reaching the idea?

I would make some sketches as to the general idea. You could look across the internet for images similar to what you want and then hire a model (who agrees to your taking photographs) and show her the pose and take a slew of photographs trying out slightly different poses and different approaches to lighting.
