If you were going to use oil pastels as a resist with water-based paints or inks on white paper, would white OP or a colorless blender be best used?

I’ve read here on WC that it works. Not sure if it’s the BEST option, but it must be worth a try as somebody already did :)

I love oil pastels and have created a blog about this medium. While the blog posts are in Russian, still I invite you to get inspired with various artists' beautiful OP paintings in my blog's gallery: https://oilpastelist.wordpress.com/gallery

ooo, sounds fun, Lamar! A cheaper brand with more wax content could help. As far as colorless vs. white – I would say that depends on your subject matter, as well as the underlying paper color. White would cover tinted paper, while white paper would show through if you used colorless medium – so paper consideration will be important.

Your choices would really control how the painting turned out. Can’t wait to see what you come up with – sounds interesting!

                    terriks, Mira88 – thanks!

I was thinking of reserving the white of the paper in this case. I wonder if white OP or a colorless blender would be most compatible with this aim over time?

Well, you sure have piqued my interest. ;) I’m really curious to see what you’ll end up with here.

White OP over white paper will definitely reserve the white for you, and should stay bright over time, too. I think it’s the route I’d take with those considerations in mind.

One last thought: could your other paint possibly stain the white OP?

Go for it, I say – sounds like a fun experiment!

The whites in different brands of op aren’t too effective except for Senneliers and Pentel has good coverage too at times. Maybe you could do a test swatch and compare? I’ve even used a candle as wax resist but wasn’t impressed with it.

Yes, a test strip, of course! Thanks, Christel. I have misplaced my only Senns – a big stick of white and a big blender, so I’m looking at a white Specialist and an Expressionist blender right now.

I’ll let you know if I come up with something interesting, Terri :) I was thinking of trying something over in watermedia before February gets away.

Watercolor with a resist sounds lovely – I’m sure Christel will let you cross post over here. ;) Good luck!
