Plein-air Attempt

I've seen so many wonderful plain-air paintings here. My attempt at it isn't great, but because it's something I've done very rarely, I'm not upset with the results. The hardest part is finding a place to paint where I don't need to take chairs, etc. The top two garden images were done sitting on my patio. The bottom two were in done in my neighborhood where there were picnic tables available. The trees are unfinished as a neighbor came by and wanted to talk. By the time she left, my excitement to paint and thought processes was gone. Anyhow, here they are.

Canson Heritage 140lb cold-press pad (for a pad, it's excellent paper) 9x12.

A beautiful beginning with the plein air painting - go on!
There are around the house a thousand motifs to try out.

I guess I am just not lucky enough to see things around me that I am able to paint, so I applaud your plein-aire paintings. The first one is my favorite, though.

Well done Jan. I've only ever painted outside once and found it difficult. You've inspired me to try again when it gets cooler here.

I love your flowers. I will have to get outside to paint soon. We have been having many wildfires this summer in BC and it has been very smokey.

Re: Plein-air Attempt

Your patio is a fine location for plein aire! I like the flowers the best. Did you use an easel or tables? I don't have an easel so that kind of limits my efforts outside to small hand held sketchbooks and similar. Therefore I usually work indoors from my photos.

Very good Jan. Top right is very three-dimensional. Sure your neighbour meant well but it's funny how passers-by will stop and chat not realising how a painting needs one's undivided attention - particularly if it is watercolour.

Re: Plein-air Attempt

Nice paintings...I have only tried painting outside once & it wasn't too successful...Like Scott, I can't seem to find anything interesting outside my own home. My fav is the flower pot in hanger.

...the yellow green washes in the background are wonderful! I really like the simplicity of the renditions...well Done!

Re: Plein-air Attempt

Very nice "attempts". These might inspire me to have a go at some plein-air.

Re: Plein-air Attempt

Very nice paintings especially the flowers. I love painting outside but I am waiting for the Autumn / Winter when things cool down a bit. The Algarve is very hot just now.
