Lake Michigan @ Leland, MI.

Well, this weeks challenge was vacation spot. This is my interpretation of a photo I have of one the most relaxing places I know of that I have personally visited. I realize I have opened myself up to a plethora of C&C. Gosh, all the concepts of patience, tone, depth, and texture were lost during this exercise. This hobby sure can turn you upside down at times. On to the next...Thanks for viewing

Thank you both of for your kind words. I thought I may be "taken to the woodshed" on this one. It's difficult to post work that you are not overly pleased with. Thanks again Doug And Kate! Have a tremendous week!

I was born & raised on the shores of lake Michigan. Leland is a great spot & you have captured it very well. Very nice.

Looks really strong - great technique for the implementation!
(Give the figures a little stand shadow for better identification.)

Re: Lake Michigan @ Leland, MI.

This almost works Jaruterr ( and incidentally I have loads of 'almost worked' paintings!)

Difficult to analyse; love the feeling of light and air and vast expanse of Lake Michigan. Your sky is a bit 'gung-ho' and over-dominant but I think you would have got away with it if you had got more foreground definition with some stronger tones to the beach and water. There is a lack of recession with the sand and green foliage changing little into the distance. The figure and dog look a bit 'tentative' as if you were not quite sure how to put them in. Think you need to make a foreground object/person stand out and, as Ernst said, some ground shadow from man & dog would help.

There you are - some well intended criticism from someone who probably wouldn't have made a better fist at it! Keep at it - your next one will be a masterpiece.

Mike

Ernst & Mike,
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is exactly why I joined this site. To post my work, have it examined by artists that I so admire, and take their critique and make me better. I think this composition has much promise and now I am excited to give it a try again. Thanks again for the appraisals! Have a great week!

Jaruterr,

I think your memory of a lovely vacation came through nicely in this painting.

A bit more work on the figure would help it stand out a little better. I like your sand effect and the water lapping on the shore a lot.

I agree - an I too have LOADS of 'almost worked" It's what gets us to the few "WOW...this worked!" ones.

Re: Lake Michigan @ Leland, MI.

Excellent water color. I painted a very similar scene and some of the things that I did to enhance it was to make a very distinct shadow/reflection for the figures. I also put some reflections on the beach where the water had been. The trees and hill side to the left need to fade out into the colors of the sky - this will give it some depth. Having said all this, yours is as good as the one that I did.

Bill, Jan, Sylvia, & Bill,

Your kind words made my heart (not head) swell. Now I am so excited to complete the second version of this composition. I know in my heart I can do better, now the head & hand must follow. Thanks again all, with this helpful information I can forge ahead.
